The Lake Glenville Webcam looks out from the Silver Creek Real Estate Group office on Highway 107 in Glenville, North Carolina, across a cove of one of the highest lakes east of the Mississippi. Floating docks with covered boats sit in the middle of the frame, a two-lane road crosses the foreground, and a wooded ridge closes off the far shore. The view changes most with the seasons and the water. In late October the trees around the cove turn red, orange and gold, and when the lake is lowered the banks below the docks stand bare. A weather panel in the top right corner of the picture gives the temperature, the wind and a three-day forecast.

About Lake Glenville

Lake Glenville, also known as Thorpe Reservoir, lies in Jackson County in the mountains of western North Carolina. Its surface sits at 1,065 meters (3,494 feet), and it covers about 595 hectares (1,470 acres) with roughly 42 kilometers (26 miles) of shoreline. The maximum depth is more than 40 meters (130 feet), and the water can already be about 24 meters (80 feet) deep close to shore.

The lake is a product of the war years. Nantahala Power and Light, then owned by Alcoa, began building the dam in June 1940 on the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, to supply hydroelectric power for aluminum production. The community of Hamburg was evacuated and flooded as the water rose. Today the lake has four public islands and five waterfalls around its edge.

The camera stands above Highway 107, looking down over it to the water. The road runs through the bottom of the picture behind a guardrail and an iron fence, with the office’s own Silver Creek sign at the lower left. Metal gangways lead down to two groups of docks, one along the left of the cove and one on the right, below a bank faced with stone. Power lines cross the sky in the upper part of the frame, and the forested ridge beyond shows only a few houses among the trees.

Weather and Climate in Lake Glenville

Altitude keeps this part of North Carolina cool. Open-Meteo’s climate data for the past decade puts July highs near 26°C (79°F) and lows near 17°C (63°F), so summer on the docks stays mild. January runs from about 6°C (43°F) in the afternoon to -3°C (27°F) overnight. The same data shows about 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow in an average year, most of it in January and December, so the road and the far ridge can turn white in a cold spell.

Spring and autumn are the two transition seasons. April highs reach about 16°C (61°F) with lows near 6°C (43°F), while the pines on the far shore stay green through the year. October is a little warmer by day at 18°C (64°F), dropping to 8°C (46°F) at night, and by the end of the month the trees around the cove are in full color. Rain falls in every month, about 1,460 millimeters (58 inches) a year, and low cloud can flatten the light over the ridge. Lake guides report that Duke Energy lowers the water in winter, by about 3 meters (10 feet) on average, to leave room for spring runoff.

Things to Do Near Lake Glenville

The Pines Recreation Area has a sandy swimming beach with a roped-off area, an accessible fishing pier and picnic benches. High Falls, also called Cullowhee Falls, is across the road from it, at the end of a short, steep hike, and drops more than 45 meters (150 feet). Ralph J. Andrews County Park covers 32 hectares (79 acres) on the lake and has 30 RV sites and 30 tent sites.

Four more waterfalls can be reached only by water: Mill Creek, Hidden, Norton and Hurricane Falls. Signal Ridge Marina rents boats for the trip, and Captain Mark’s Scenic Boat Tours runs sunset waterfall cruises. The open water is also used for fishing, paddleboarding and water skiing. Water released from the dam six times a year creates class IV rapids. Cashiers lies to the south on Highway 107, and Cullowhee, home of Western Carolina University, is to the north.
