The Stary Sacz Webcam looks across the cobbled market square of Stary Sacz, a small historic town in the hills of southern Poland, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Nowy Sacz. The feed comes from Restauracja Marysienka on the west side of the square, and the white Regional Museum stands straight ahead across the cobbles. Rows of parked cars fill much of the open ground, low one- and two-story houses with red and grey-blue roofs line the edges, and the baroque tower of St. Elizabeth’s parish church rises above the rooftops on the right. Wooded hills close the view behind the town. Cars come and go all day while people cross the square on foot, and in mid-October the woods on those hills turn yellow and copper.

About Stary Sacz

Stary Sacz sits at about 320 meters (1,050 feet) above sea level, between the Dunajec and Poprad rivers close to where the two meet. The town covers 16.56 square kilometers (6.39 square miles) and had 9,211 residents in 2021. Its history is tied to Duchess Kinga, who founded a convent of Poor Clare nuns here around 1280. Pope John Paul II canonized her as Saint Kinga on the Stary Sacz meadows on 16 June 1999, and the field altar built for that visit still stands.

The square in front of the camera keeps the town’s original street plan. A town hall stood in the middle until a fire in 1795 destroyed it, and it was never rebuilt, so the center is open ground today. One building that survived the fire is Dom na Dolkach, the 17th-century merchant’s house with the arched doorway straight across from the camera. It houses the Regional Museum, named after Seweryn Udziela and opened in 1956, which has also shown memorabilia from the papal visit since 1999.

The tower on the right belongs to the parish church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a Gothic building from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries that was partly remodeled in the Baroque period. The convent church of the Holy Trinity and St. Clare, also Gothic and decorated with Baroque polychrome, stands a few hundred meters east of the square. The convent holds 13th-century music manuscripts that include some of the oldest Polish polyphonic music, and the town has hosted a festival of early music since 1975, with concerts in both churches.

Things to Do Near Stary Sacz

Start on the square with the Regional Museum in Dom na Dolkach, then walk south to St. Elizabeth’s church on Mickiewicza Street and east to the Poor Clares convent, which is still an active convent today. The Papal Altar from the 1999 canonization stands on Papieska Street, and a John Paul II Museum operates there.

Away from the old town, Bobrowisko is a stretch of ponds on the floodplain in the fork of the Dunajec and Poprad, with wooden footbridges and observation points along a walk of about 40 minutes. It is roughly a 10-minute drive from the center. Hikers can pick up the yellow trail at the railway station and follow it to Wielka Przehyba, a walk of about 4 hours 50 minutes, and Poprad Landscape Park is close by. The larger town of Nowy Sacz lies about 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the northeast.

The stream comes from Restauracja Marysienka at Rynek 12, on the west side of the square, and is broadcast on YouTube by the local site starysacz.info. The restaurant’s name and the words “Stary Sacz – Rynek” are printed in the bottom right corner of the picture.
