The Beach Bar Webcam looks along the covered deck of The Beach Bar, the open-air bar on Cruz Bay Beach in St. John, US Virgin Islands. The camera sits high in one corner, so the bar counter fills the middle of the frame, with white stools lined up along a rail on the open beach side and tables against the painted wall on the left. Past the rail, blue umbrellas, picnic tables and boats moored in the bay show between the posts. String lights run along the roof beams, and stickers cover the posts on the beach side. A second tab on the player switches to the bar’s 180-degree panorama camera, which looks straight out over the sand to the harbor and the ferry dock.
The Beach Bar is in Wharfside Village on Cruz Bay Beach, and the bar describes itself as “just down the beach from the Cruz Bay Ferry Dock,” so it is a short walk from where the passenger ferries tie up. Cruz Bay is the largest town on St. John and the island’s main port. The Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center, the post office and the Mongoose Junction shopping center are all in town, within walking distance of the beach.
The drinks list leans on rum classics, led by Painkillers made with Cruzan dark rum and the bar’s Bushwackers, and the kitchen serves burgers, fish tacos and conch fritters. Live music plays almost any night of the week, according to the bar, covering “rock, island music, bluegrass and everything in between.” The stage sits at the far end of the deck behind the bar, so on music nights the band is in the back of the camera’s frame. The bar’s website also lists a daily happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m.
St. John itself is small: 50.8 square kilometers (19.6 square miles), with 3,881 residents at the 2020 census. About 60 percent of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, established in 1956. The bar’s cameras were built by Vickery Hill, and the streams run on the St. John USVI YouTube channel, which carries around 20 live views from across the island.
Cruz Bay is warm all year, so the seasons show up on the camera as changes in rain and light more than in what people wear. Winter, from December to February, is the coolest and driest stretch, with average highs around 29 C (84 F) and nights near 21 C (70 F). February is the driest month at about 48 mm (1.9 inches) of rain. Spring warms slowly, and by May highs reach 30 C (86 F) while rainfall climbs to around 100 mm (4 inches).
Summer is the hottest season, with August highs of 31.8 C (89.2 F) and lows around 24 C (76 F). The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and September to November is the wettest part of the year: November averages 160 mm (6.3 inches) and September 150 mm (6 inches). Hurricane Irma hit St. John in September 2017. The yearly total is about 1,140 mm (44.7 inches), according to Weatherbase figures for Cruz Bay. Because the town is on the island’s west coast, the sun sets behind the boats on the panorama tab, and the bar points people to that camera for exactly this. After dark the bar camera switches to black and white.
The Lind Point Trail starts behind the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center, a few minutes on foot from the bar. It reaches the Lind Point overlook after 0.6 kilometers (0.4 miles), then drops to Salomon Bay at 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) and Honeymoon Beach at 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles), so two national park beaches are within reach without a car. Hawksnest Bay, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay lie farther along the north shore, and inside the park the ruins of the Annaberg sugar plantation date from 1731.
Cruz Bay is also the island’s ferry hub. Passenger boats cross to Red Hook on St. Thomas, about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) to the west, in roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and a car barge runs as well. Other ferries leave for Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, so a day on another island starts a few steps down the beach from the bar.
More beach and harbor cameras from the Virgin Islands:
The Beach Bar is in Wharfside Village on Cruz Bay Beach, in Cruz Bay, the main town on the west coast of St. John in the US Virgin Islands. It is a short walk down the beach from the Cruz Bay ferry dock, where passenger ferries arrive from Red Hook on St. Thomas.
The main camera looks along the bar’s covered deck: the counter, the stools on the beach rail, the tables by the wall and, through the open side, umbrellas on the sand and boats in the bay. The Beach Panorama tab is a 180-degree view from the bar’s outer wall over its picnic tables and palm trees to the harbor, from the dive shop at one end of the beach to the ferry dock at the other.
No. Both streams on this page are silent. For live music, the bar says it runs an audio and video feed of the stage on its own website when bands are playing.
The panorama tab does: the ferry dock and the ferries tied up there sit at the right-hand end of the 180-degree view. The main bar camera is aimed along the deck rather than across the bay, so switch to the panorama tab to watch boats arrive.
Yes, the bar runs a separate stage camera, but it only streams when there is live music, so it is not on this page. On music nights the band also shows up in the background of the main bar camera, and the bar posts its music calendar on its website.
Warm all year. Average highs run from about 29 C (84 F) in January to 32 C (89 F) in August, with nights between 21 and 24 C (70 and 76 F). February and March are the driest months, and September to November is the wettest stretch and the peak of the hurricane season.
Yes. After dark the bar camera switches to black and white, and the deck lights keep the bar, the tables and the stage in view, so evening crowds and bands still show clearly. The panorama tab is at its best around sunset.
