The Carova Beach Osprey Webcam looks straight down into a big stick nest on a platform beside a quiet canal at the northern tip of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Two tube feeders full of seed hang from a post just behind the nest, gnarled trees spread across the left of the frame and calm canal water fills the right. This is the home of Frederick and Betsy, a pair of ospreys followed by the OBX Osprey Cam project, which streams three cameras from the platform: the Nest Cam, a Perch Cam and a PTZ camera. In spring and summer the nest can fill with eggs, chicks and fish deliveries. From September until the end of winter it usually stands empty.

About the Carova Beach Osprey Nest

Carova Beach is an unincorporated community in Currituck County, begun in the 1960s, and the northernmost of the Outer Banks communities in North Carolina. Its name joins the first syllables of Carolina and Virginia, because the state line runs just to the north. No paved road reaches it: visitors drive north along the beach from Corolla in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, or come by boat. About 50 people live here year-round among roughly 740 beach homes, and Banker horses roam freely on the beach.

The nest sits on a platform 7.3 meters (24 feet) high beside a brackish canal, about 400 meters (a quarter mile) from Knotts Island Bay and 1.2 kilometers (three-quarters of a mile) from the Atlantic Ocean, according to the operator. A nesting box 1.1 meters (3.5 feet) square crowns the platform, with a roosting perch on the west side over the canal. A weather station on top reports temperature and wind straight from the nest.

The Nest Cam, the main view on this page, frames the whole nest cup from above, with pine cones caught among the sticks and the canal bulkhead along the right. The Perch Cam looks along the wooden T-shaped perch that the feeders hang from and on down the canal, past lawns, trees and a boat dock. The PTZ Cam, which the operator says has a zoom of about 30 times, swings around for close views of the birds and the nest rim.

When to Watch the Carova Beach Ospreys

The operator logs each season’s key events, and the dates make a good guide to the year. Frederick returned on March 1 in 2025 and on February 27 in 2026, with Betsy back on March 20 and March 29. In 2026 the eggs came on April 21 and April 24 and hatched on May 28 and May 29, a little over five weeks later. The chicks, Smokey and Bandit, fledged on July 24 and July 28. In 2025 one chick, Latte, left early by falling out of the nest on August 1 and flew properly six days later.

Once the young can fly, the family drifts away. In 2026 Betsy was last seen on camera on August 2, Frederick on September 1 and Bandit on September 3. Ospreys that nest on the US East Coast spend the winter in South America, a long journey of the kind traced on our bird migration map.

Weather and Climate in Carova Beach

Carova Beach has a humid subtropical climate. January is the coldest month, with average highs near 10°C (50°F) and lows around 2°C (35°F), and February is the usual peak of nor’easter season. Snow is rare, averaging under 5 centimeters (2 inches) a winter. Spring warms quickly, and April highs reach about 19°C (67°F), around the time the eggs appear.

July is the warmest month, at about 30°C (86°F) by day and 23°C (74°F) at night, and a sea breeze cools most summer afternoons. July to September are also the wettest months, with roughly 130 to 137 millimeters (5.1 to 5.4 inches) each. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks from late August through September, when storm surge can wash over the beach and cut Carova off from Corolla.

Things to Do Near Carova Beach

The wild horses are the reason most people make the beach drive. The Banker horses of the Currituck Banks are believed to descend from Spanish mustangs brought over in the 16th century, and a law keeps everyone at least 15 meters (50 feet) away from them. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund, which looks after the herd, runs a museum and gift shop in Corolla. Much of the land between Corolla and Carova belongs to the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, set up in 1984 to protect the barrier island ecosystem.

Corolla, about 17 kilometers (10 miles) south where the paved road ends, holds the other sights. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, finished on December 1, 1875, was left as bare red brick, and visitors can climb its 220 steps to the gallery of the 49-meter (162-foot) tower. Close by, the Whalehead is a 1,950-square-meter (21,000-square-foot) Art Nouveau house built between 1922 and 1925 on the Currituck Sound shore. Across Knotts Island Bay, Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, set up in 1960 for wintering waterfowl such as greater snow geese, covers most of Knotts Island.
