The Virginia Beach Boardwalk Webcam looks out from the Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South at 25th Street, across the small oceanfront park where the Norwegian Lady statue faces the Atlantic. A wide-angle lens takes in the hotel’s white patio rail on the left, a brick plaza with planted beds and low stone benches, a dark memorial pillar in the foreground and the bronze statue on her pedestal just beyond it. The boardwalk crosses the middle of the frame, a row of tall steel hoops lines its seaward edge, and past them come the sand, the surf and the open horizon. A hotel tower closes off the right side. The picture changes with the hour and the season, from early walkers on the boardwalk to summer crowds on the sand and the quiet of the off-season.

About the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

Virginia Beach, home to 459,470 people at the 2020 census, faces the Atlantic in southeastern Virginia. Its boardwalk runs for 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) between Rudee Inlet in the south and 40th Street in the north, with a dedicated bike lane beside the walkway that keeps cyclists apart from people on foot. The camera sits 15 blocks south of the northern end, on the Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South at 2501 Atlantic Avenue, a beachfront hotel with an indoor pool and a whirlpool spa. VBbound, a visitor guide to the city, publishes the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Webcam along with two more boardwalk cams at 5th Street and 31st Street.

The statue in the middle of the shot has a sad story behind it. On March 27, 1891, the Norwegian barque Dictator, loaded with yellow pine on a voyage from Pensacola, Florida to England, went down in a storm off Virginia Beach. Seven people died, among them the captain’s wife and their young son. The ship’s wooden figurehead stood on the beach as a memorial for 62 years, until Hurricane Barbara damaged it badly in 1953 and it was taken away.

The people of Moss, the Dictator’s home port in Norway, raised the money for a replacement. Norwegian sculptor Ornulf Bast cast the Norwegian Lady in bronze, about 2.7 meters (9 feet) tall, and on September 21, 1962 two identical statues went up, one here and one in Moss, each looking out across the ocean toward her sister. The link became official in 1974, when the City Council invited Moss to become the city’s first sister city. On camera she stands just right of center in 25th Street Park, facing out to sea, so the lens sees her from behind.

Weather and Climate in Virginia Beach

Summers are hot. At Norfolk International Airport, the reference station for the area, July averages a high of 32 C (89 F) and a low of 23 C (73 F) on the 1991 to 2020 normals, and this is when the sand in front of the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Webcam is at its busiest. January averages 10 C (51 F) by day and 1 C (34 F) at night, and spring and fall sit between those extremes. Precipitation, almost all of it rain, comes to about 1,200 millimeters (47 inches) a year at the airport and over 1,300 millimeters (50 inches) at Back Bay in the far south of the city.

Snow is uncommon, averaging about 150 millimeters (5.8 inches) a year at the airport, so a white boardwalk is an event rather than a fixture. The city lies south of the usual path of storms from higher latitudes and north of the main hurricane tracks, though Hurricane Isabel in 2003 was a sharp exception. The sea has reshaped this exact spot before: Hurricane Barbara is the storm that wrecked the old figurehead. Because the beach faces east, the morning sun comes up over the water, and the surf in the background can turn rough when a storm passes offshore.

Things to Do Near the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

The simplest plan is to walk or ride the boardwalk itself. Six blocks north, at 31st Street, the King Neptune statue marks the entrance to Neptune Park: it stands 10 meters (34 feet) tall and weighs about 11 metric tons (12.5 tons). Head the other way and the boardwalk ends at Rudee Inlet, with the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center just south of the inlet. The aquarium opened on June 14, 1986 and holds more than 3 million liters (800,000 US gallons) of fresh and salt water across its exhibits.

At the northern end of the city, inside Fort Story, stand the two Cape Henry Lighthouses. The older tower dates from 1792, was the first lighthouse authorized by the United States government and is the fourth oldest in the country. Its iron successor rises 48 meters (157 feet) and was fitted with a more powerful first-order Fresnel lens. The old lighthouse reopened for tours in August 2026 under new visitor rules, so check them before you go.
