The Pigeon Forge Webcam looks out from the WonderWorks building at 100 Music Road, across its parking lot and a wide lawn to the Parkway, the main road through this Tennessee resort town. Cars and pickups fill the lanes and queue at the traffic signal, while motels climb a wooded rise on the left. On the right stands the crooked, dark facade of the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud theater, with its bright video sign facing the road. The Parkway runs off toward a line of attraction buildings, and a low blue ridge of the Smokies closes the horizon. Watch it for the build-up of Parkway traffic, the slopes turning orange and red in fall, and the cloud sitting on the mountains.

About Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge is a city of 6,343 people (2020 census) in Sevier County, East Tennessee, at an elevation of 303 meters (994 feet). It lies between Sevierville and Gatlinburg, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The name comes from an iron forge that Isaac Love built around 1820 on the Little Pigeon River. The city was not incorporated until 1961.

Tourism came late. When the national park opened in 1934, the Tennessee Valley Authority reported no tourist businesses in the town at all. Today the Parkway is lined with theaters, museums and motels, and the theme park Silver Dollar City became Dollywood in 1986 after Dolly Parton partnered with its operators.

WonderWorks is the well-known upside-down building on that strip, an indoor attraction of more than 3,250 square meters (35,000 square feet) with over 100 hands-on exhibits. Parking bays fill the bottom of the frame, so visitors’ cars come and go below the road. The Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud at 119 Music Road is the large building on the right, and the Titanic Museum stands next to it.

Weather and Climate in Pigeon Forge

January is the coldest month, with average highs of 9°C (48°F) and lows of -4°C (25°F). About 23 centimeters (9 inches) of snow falls in a typical year, so a white Parkway is possible on the camera but not common. Spring moves quickly: National Park Service lowland figures, taken from neighboring Gatlinburg, give March highs of 16°C (61°F) and lows of 1°C (34°F), with daytime highs usually above 21°C (70°F) by mid-April and frequent afternoon showers.

July brings average highs of 30°C (86°F) and lows of 17°C (63°F) in Pigeon Forge. The park service describes summer as heat, haze and humidity, with afternoon thunderstorms, so the ridge on the horizon can fade from view. Yearly precipitation is about 1,407 millimeters (55 inches). Fall is the driest stretch, at about 76 to 86 millimeters (3.0 to 3.4 inches) a month, with Gatlinburg highs falling from 28°C (83°F) in September to 16°C (61°F) in November. The park’s color season runs from September through mid-November, and in late October the hillside behind the motels shows strong orange and red.

Things to Do Near Pigeon Forge

WonderWorks itself is the closest stop. Inside you can land a simulated space shuttle, lie on a bed of nails, feel a 5.3 earthquake, ride a virtual roller coaster, climb an indoor ropes course and play laser tag. The Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud is also on Music Road, and the Titanic Museum is its neighbor. Elsewhere in town you will find the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Alcatraz East Crime Museum, the Comedy Barn Theater, Cooter’s Place, the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame and The Island in Pigeon Forge. The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster adds a ride outdoors.

Dollywood is the name most visitors know, joined in 2001 by the Dollywood’s Splash Country water park, and Dolly Parton’s Stampede is the singer’s dinner show in town. For the mountains rather than the attractions, Great Smoky Mountains National Park begins about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the city, with Gatlinburg as the next town along the way.
