The Montrose Colorado Webcam is a 360-degree Roundshot camera that the City of Montrose runs from Sunset Mesa, the low ridge on the west side of town. Every 10 minutes it captures a full circle of the Uncompahgre Valley as one panorama, and the player lets you drag it around in any direction. To the north, the rooftops, stores and cottonwood-lined parks of Montrose run out toward the long flat top of Grand Mesa. To the south, the snowy summits of the San Juan Mountains line the horizon above open fields and the river corridor. The camera shoots in daylight only, from shortly before sunrise until just after sunset, so the player holds the last evening panorama overnight and starts updating again on its own the next morning.

About Montrose, Colorado

Montrose sits on the Uncompahgre River in the Uncompahgre Valley of western Colorado, at an elevation of 1,770 meters (5,807 feet). The town was incorporated in 1882 and takes its name from the Marquis of Montrose, a character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel A Legend of Montrose. The 2020 census counted 20,291 residents.

Many residents know Sunset Mesa as the Hogback, and its Ute name, Concarruh, means “rolling stones.” Before settlers arrived, the Utes used the mesa as a guide for finding Chief Ouray’s farm, which is now the site of the Ute Indian Museum. A former owner deeded the mesa to the town and insisted that it be called Sunset Mesa. Today it holds soccer and baseball fields, walking paths and Grandview Cemetery at its south end. The camera records its own altitude as 1,824 meters (5,984 feet), about 54 meters (177 feet) above the town’s official elevation, and it sits on top of a water tower whose railing and red aircraft beacons show along the bottom of the frame when you turn the view south.

North and northeast, the town spreads across the valley floor. Riverbottom Park and the Montrose Water Sports Park lie about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away, and the viewer labels both the water park and the city’s new Public Works facility. Grand Mesa forms the flat skyline more than 65 kilometers (40 miles) to the north, while a long ridge rises east of town toward the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. On a clear day the southern horizon carries the San Juan Mountains, from Uncompahgre Peak, 4,365 meters (14,321 feet) high and about 56 kilometers (35 miles) to the southeast, around to Mount Sneffels, 4,315 meters (14,157 feet) high and about 51 kilometers (32 miles) almost due south. Westward, soccer fields and baseball diamonds sit just below the camera, with the dark rim of the Uncompahgre Plateau beyond.

Weather and Climate in Montrose

Montrose has a dry, sunny climate, with only about 237 millimeters (9.3 inches) of precipitation a year in NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Montrose #2 station. Summers are hot by day and cool at night: July averages highs of 32°C (90°F) and lows of 15°C (59°F). Spring warms quickly, from average highs of 14°C (57°F) in March to 23°C (74°F) in May, and the cottonwoods below the mesa leaf out bright green along the river.

Autumn is the most colorful season on the camera. October highs average 19°C (67°F), the river corridor turns gold, and snow can appear on the high peaks to the south while the valley floor is still green. Winters are cold but fairly dry. January averages a high of 5°C (40°F) and a low of -8°C (18°F), and the town gets about 55 centimeters (21.5 inches) of snow a year, enough to turn the fields white after a storm.

Things to Do Near Montrose

The Montrose Water Sports Park, run by the city on the Uncompahgre River, is the closest attraction in the panorama. Six drop structures create six different waves, with accessible put-in and take-out ramps and terraced spectator and beach areas, and the park has a growing name as a river surfing spot. The Uncompahgre Riverway Trail starts in Montrose and follows the river toward Ouray. Sunset Mesa itself has long been used for walking, disc golf and flying model airplanes, and the Ute Indian Museum, on the homestead of Chief Ouray, includes a memorial to the 19th-century Ute leader.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park lies east of town, reached on US 50 and Colorado 347, and its gorge is about 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep. Its South Rim campground is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the camera in a straight line. Ridgway State Park is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) away on the road south toward Ouray, and the Museum of the Mountain West sits about 6 kilometers (4 miles) from town.
