The Eagle County Airport Webcam looks across the airfield at Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) in Gypsum, Colorado, the airport that serves Vail and the rest of Eagle County. Two long bands of pavement cross the foreground, and beyond them stands the passenger terminal with its jet bridges, airliners parked at the gates and a row of hangars. Houses and a dark, forested ridge fill the back of the frame, and in the colder months the crest of that ridge often carries snow. Winter is the busy season, when seasonal flights from hubs across the country add to the year-round service to Denver, and every arrival and departure uses the single runway in front of the camera.
Eagle County Regional Airport sits at 6,547 feet (1,996 meters) between Gypsum and Eagle, about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the town of Eagle and 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Vail. It is owned by Eagle County, which also runs this camera. The ground has a long local history: Louise Ellen Cooley bought the land in 1911, and the terminal’s address is still on Cooley Mesa Road. The field was dedicated as a fully functioning airport on September 14, 1947.
One runway, 07/25, handles every flight. A project in 2008 and 2009 repaved it and extended it to 9,000 feet (2,743 meters). The original terminal dates from 1996 and was remodeled in 2001, 2007 and 2019, and on July 1, 2019 the first phase of a new terminal opened with four gates served by jet bridges, the covered walkways you can pick out near the middle of the frame. Traffic has grown quickly since the pandemic years: the airport counted 289,867 passenger boardings in 2024, up from 232,215 in 2023 and 143,000 in 2020.
Flying in is not routine. The field is well over a mile high, winter brings snow and low cloud, and the approaches run between mountain ridges. In July 2010 the History Channel ranked it eighth on its list of Most Extreme Airports, citing the elevation, the weather, the mountainous approaches and the departure procedures. On the Eagle County Airport Webcam, that shows most clearly on a stormy day, when the ridge behind the terminal can disappear into cloud.
The airport’s own weather station gives the long-term picture, and its 1981 to 2010 normals describe a dry mountain valley with big swings between day and night. January afternoons average about 0°C (32°F), but nights fall to around -12°C (10°F), and the record low is -46°C (-51°F). Snowfall is modest by Colorado mountain standards at about 119 centimeters (47 inches) a year. December is the snowiest month at roughly 30 centimeters (12 inches), and most of the year’s snow falls between November and March, when the white ridge behind the terminal makes the best backdrop on the camera.
Summer is warm by day and cool at night. July afternoons average about 28°C (83°F) with nights near 11°C (51°F), and July is also the wettest month, with about 38 millimeters (1.5 inches) of precipitation. Spring and fall pass quickly: April highs average about 14°C (57°F) and October highs about 16°C (60°F), with nights close to freezing in both. Across a whole year the station records only about 287 millimeters (11.3 inches) of precipitation, so dry, bright days are common on the camera in every season.
Eagle, the county seat, is the nearest town to the east, with 7,511 residents at the 2020 census and an elevation of 6,601 feet (2,012 meters). Chambers Park lies along the Eagle River in town, and Eagle’s trail system for mountain biking, hiking and trail running connects with the Hardscrabble Recreation Area. Brush Creek Road leads about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Eagle to Sylvan Lake State Park, a mountain lake at about 8,500 feet (2,590 meters) with a campground.
West of the airport, the Gypsum Campground on the Eagle River is a launch point for rafting, with the floating season running from late May to July. Farther west, near Dotsero, the Dotsero Crater is Colorado’s youngest volcano, last active about 4,200 years ago. Beyond it, Interstate 70 enters Glenwood Canyon, where the Hanging Lake trail starts from Exit 125, and Glenwood Springs sits about 31 miles (50 kilometers) west of Eagle. Heading east, the same highway reaches Vail, 37 miles (60 kilometers) from the terminal.

United flies to Denver year-round. In the ski season, seasonal service from American, Delta, Alaska and United adds routes to hubs such as Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, Chicago and Seattle. Seasonal routes change from year to year, so check the current schedule before booking.
The single runway, 07/25, is 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) long after the 2008 and 2009 repaving and extension. The field sits at 6,547 feet (1,996 meters) above sea level.
Its elevation, mountain weather and approaches through high terrain make it demanding for pilots. The History Channel placed it eighth on its Most Extreme Airports list in 2010.
