Об этой веб-камере

The Newcastle Central Station Webcam looks across the tracks at the northeastern end of Newcastle Central Station, where the main line leaves the station on a stone viaduct above Forth Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. Overhead line masts and wires cross the foreground, a micropub and a deli sit in the arches below, and a car park fills the ground between the railway and the Four Points Flex hotel on Westgate Road. Above the rooftops rises the lantern tower of St Nicholas Cathedral, framed by modern office blocks. Railcam UK runs the camera, and the train operator Lumo makes the view available. Every so often it pans around to the High Level Bridge over the Tyne, so the picture does not always hold the same view.

About Newcastle Central Station

Newcastle Central Station opened on 29 August 1850, when Queen Victoria arrived by train to perform the formal opening. John Dobson designed it, working with the engineers T.E. Harrison and Robert Stephenson, and its curved train shed roof rests on wrought iron ribs. Thomas Prosser’s portico on Neville Street followed in 1863. The station is a Grade I listed building with 11 working platforms, it handled about 10.5 million entries and exits in 2024/25, and it lies roughly 432 kilometers (268 miles) north of London King’s Cross on the East Coast Main Line. The Tyne and Wear Metro has its own Central Station directly beneath it.

The camera watches the end of the station that was once famous for its tangle of diamond crossings, described in its day as the greatest such crossing in the world before it was simplified. From here the line runs on a Grade II listed viaduct toward Castle Garth, engineered by Thomas Harrison for the Newcastle, York and Berwick Railway, with later work by William Bell for the North Eastern Railway around 1890. A little farther east the viaduct fills almost all of the gap of 23 meters (75 feet) between the Castle Keep and the Black Gate, carrying the main line on toward Scotland. The High Level Bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson and opened on 27 September 1849, joins from the southeast and still carries trains, road traffic and people on foot.

The tower on the skyline is the lantern of the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, built in 1448 and 59 meters (194 feet) tall; the parish church became a cathedral in 1882. Lumo, which makes the camera’s view available, is a FirstGroup open access operator that started running between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley on 25 October 2021, using five-car Hitachi Class 803 electric trains built at Newton Aycliffe.

Weather and Climate in Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle has a cool, changeable climate with rain in every season. In the Met Office averages for 1991 to 2020, January days reach about 7°C (45°F) and nights drop to around 1°C (34°F), while July brings highs near 20°C (68°F) and lows around 11°C (52°F). The same figures give about 676 millimeters (27 inches) of rain a year. Ten years of Open-Meteo archive data show small amounts of snow in most months from November to March, so a white dusting on the viaduct and the parked cars is possible, though the monthly totals are small.

Daylight swings hard at this latitude. Around the December solstice the sun is up for only about 7 hours and is down by mid-afternoon, so winter views from this camera are short and often gray, with low sun picking out the stone of the cathedral tower. By the June solstice the day stretches past 17 hours, and trains run under daylight from early morning until late evening. On clear days the lantern stands sharp against the sky; under low cloud the office blocks behind it fade toward the same gray.

Things to Do Near Newcastle Central Station

Newcastle Castle is the obvious first walk from the station. The Castle Keep and the Black Gate, which dates from 1247 to 1250, are run together as a single attraction, and the main line passes straight between them on its viaduct. The cathedral whose lantern tops the camera’s skyline stands just north of the castle. Closer still, Beer Street is a micropub in Arch 10 on Forth Street, one of the arches under the line, with wall art inspired by the Hogarth print that gave it its name.

The Life Science Centre at the International Centre for Life is a few minutes’ walk from the station, and the Discovery Museum, relaunched in 1993, occupies the former Co-operative Wholesale Society building. For trains seen from another angle, walk across the High Level Bridge to Gateshead: it still takes pedestrians, so you can cross the Tyne on the same structure the camera sometimes swings around to show.
