The Sandy Hook Osprey Webcam looks across a stick nest on a wooden platform in front of the Spermaceti Cove Life-Saving Station, on the ocean side of Sandy Hook in New Jersey. The Sandy Hook Foundation, the official Friends Group of the National Park Service at Sandy Hook, runs the camera and streams it on YouTube. The nest fills the middle of the picture: a deep, untidy pile of sticks packed inside a railed wooden box on a tall post, with a diagonal brace underneath, two long poles angled up above it and thin guy wires running down out of the picture. Behind it the Atlantic fills the frame, lined with rows of breaking waves on a windy day, and a strip of sand and dune grass runs along the bottom. From spring to late summer the platform belongs to a pair of ospreys and their chicks.

About the Sandy Hook Osprey Nest

Sandy Hook is a barrier spit in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, about 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) long and between 0.16 and 1.61 kilometers (0.1 and 1 mile) wide. The Atlantic runs along its eastern shore and Sandy Hook Bay lies to the west, while the tip of the spit encloses the southern entrance of Lower New York Bay. The whole peninsula is the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, established in 1972.

The building the nest stands in front of is the Spermaceti Cove Life-Saving Station, also known as Station No. 2. It was built in 1894 about 305 meters (1,000 feet) from the site of an 1848 station, a shingle-style building of one and a half stories with a boathouse and a four-story tower, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 30, 1981. From 1974 the National Park Service used it as a visitor center. Today the Sandy Hook Foundation runs it as its Lifesaving Station, with a shop and a program of classes and events, on the boardwalk between parking Lots D and E.

Ospreys come back to Sandy Hook each spring from winter homes in the southern United States and Central or South America, according to the Foundation, and they typically mate for life and return to the same nest sites year after year. Three chicks hatched on this platform in spring 2025, the season the camera went live, and the Foundation shared the stream so anyone could watch the pair raise their young. The National Park Service describes ospreys as a common sight at Sandy Hook from March through early September. For the rest of the year the camera keeps streaming the bare nest and the sea, while the birds are away on the long seasonal journeys that our bird migration map follows.

Weather and Climate at Sandy Hook

With the ocean on one side and the bay on the other, Sandy Hook has cold winters and warm summers. Ten-year averages from the Open-Meteo archive (2015 to 2024) put January afternoons at about 5°C (41°F) and nights near -2°C (28°F), while July reaches about 28°C (82°F) by day and 21°C (70°F) at night. August is barely cooler, and September still averages around 24°C (75°F) in the afternoon, close to the end of the osprey season.

The season this camera is built for begins as the air warms. March averages 9°C (48°F) by day, April 14°C (57°F) and May 19°C (66°F), the months when the ospreys arrive back at Sandy Hook. By June, highs average 25°C (77°F), and the chicks grow through the warmest weeks of the year. Autumn cools slowly, from 19°C (66°F) in October to 13°C (55°F) in November and 8°C (46°F) in December. On windy days the sea behind the platform turns grey and choppy, as it did when this camera was checked in early November.

Things to Do Near Sandy Hook

The Lifesaving Station is the natural first stop, since the nest is right in front of it. The Foundation’s store is inside, and the building hosts classes, summer programs such as beach yoga, and seasonal events, including a four-day Holiday Art Show and Sale in December. Opening hours are short outside summer: in November the station opens on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, depending on volunteers. Public beaches run along the whole eastern shore of the spit, from South Beach to Gunnison Beach, which is clothing optional, and North Beach. The station sits on the Sandy Hook Multi-Use Path, and a bike path follows the main road up the peninsula.

About 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the north, Fort Hancock is a former U.S. Army post that is open to visitors, and the Sandy Hook Light stands on its grounds. First lit on June 11, 1764, the lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, its 200th year. In summer the SeaStreak ferry runs between Manhattan and Sandy Hook. In nearby Highlands, the Twin Lights State Historic Site preserves the boathouse of the 1848 life-saving station, which the Twin Lights Historical Society moved there from Sandy Hook in the 1950s.
