Norwegian Star Webcam – A Ship Built for Star Cruises

Stream hours: Norwegian Cruise Line puts a new image from the ship online about every 5 minutes, and the player loads each one by itself. After dark the picture is mostly black beyond the lit bow.

The Norwegian Star Webcam is a forward ship camera on Norwegian Star, a Dawn class ship of Norwegian Cruise Line first planned for Star Cruises as SuperStar Libra. It looks along the centerline from high above the bow, over a pair of round tubs on a tan foredeck, a white mast and a line of railing, then out across the water ahead. NCL publishes the camera as a still image, with the ship’s name, the date and the time in faint print at the top left. The scene changes with the voyage: open water and horizon at sea, then coastlines, harbors, terminals and other ships near land. Rain can bead on the glass in front of the lens and scatter dark spots across the top of the frame.

About Norwegian Star

Norwegian Star was built at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, as a Panamax ship, sized close to the limit of the original Panama Canal locks. The first of her 60 prefabricated blocks was laid on June 23, 2000, and she floated out on September 30, 2001. She was christened in Miami on November 17, 2001, in a dual ceremony with Norwegian Sun, and she entered regular service on December 16.

She measures 91,740 GT and 294 meters (965 feet), with 15 decks, 2,348 passengers and a crew of 1,031. Most of her 1,176 cabins were built with ocean views. She is registered at Nassau and flies the flag of the Bahamas. She started on Hawaiian cruises and moved to Alaska and the Mexican Riviera in 2004.

What Can You See on the Norwegian Star Webcam?

The two round tubs are the easy landmark on the Norwegian Star Webcam. They sit side by side near the bottom center of the frame, each with its own short white stair, just behind the mast and in front of the deck machinery at the point of the bow. Railings angle out on either side, so the ship’s shape reads as a clean wedge. The rest of the picture is water and sky, with the horizon set well above the middle. Gray weather can wash the frame almost to monochrome, and the droplets on the glass are at their most obvious then. Near land, the same wide view takes in headlands, breakwaters, terminals and other ships.

From SuperStar Libra to Hawaii

The plans for SuperStar Libra were unveiled on June 7, 1999, at a cost of 400 million US dollars, as the first of two Libra class ships for Star Cruises. When Star Cruises bought NCL, both ships were transferred, in March 2001. SuperStar Libra became Norwegian Star, SuperStar Scorpio became Norwegian Dawn, and the class took the name of the second ship. The decor and layout had been meant for Asian and Australian passengers rather than the Americans she ended up carrying.

Hawaiian law meant she was built without a casino, which was rare for a cruise ship, and one was added only in 2005 after she moved to the West Coast. She also carries two three-bedroom suites on top of the ship with a private garden and sundeck. A planned stint as a floating hotel for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics was cancelled, which let NCL bring forward a refit at Victoria that added 58 new suites and staterooms.
