Thassos has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. July and August highs in Limenas average 31°C to 32°C (88°F to 90°F), nights stay near 23°C (73°F), and very little rain falls, so the harbor water often sits flat and blue under a clear sky. Autumn starts warm, with October highs near 21°C (70°F), then turns wet. November averages 16°C (61°F) and is usually the wettest month, when low cloud can hide the hills behind the town. The trees on the quay have turned orange by late October.

Winter is mild by day and cool at night, with January highs around 10°C (50°F) and lows around 3°C (37°F). The island’s recorded extremes run from -4.8°C (23°F) in winter to 39°C (102°F) in August. Most of ancient Thasos is a short walk from the quay on camera. The Archaeological Museum is about 150 meters (490 feet) from the hotel, with 18 galleries and a 3.5-meter (11.5-foot) kouros carrying a goat as its showpiece. The Ancient Agora lies about 300 meters (980 feet) from the same spot, once the political and religious center of the city. From the Agora, a path of about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) loops past the Ancient Theatre and the Acropolis on its three hills, then back to town. Stretches of the old city walls still stand above the town, with named gates such as the Gate of Parmenon on the south side.

For a swim, Makryammos beach is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) southeast of the harbor. Golden Beach, the largest on the island, runs for 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) along the east coast, and Paradise Beach lies 22 kilometers (14 miles) from Limenas. Inland, the village of Panagia sits 300 meters (984 feet) above the sea, with spring water running through its fountains and a water-powered mill dating from 1915 at the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum. On the southeast coast, the Aliki peninsula holds marble quarries in use from as early as the 12th century BC, with cut wedges still visible at the water’s edge.
