Clearwater Webcam – Catch the Sunset Over Pier 60

The Clearwater Webcam looks out from Jimmy’s Crows Nest, a rooftop bar on the 10th floor of the Pier House 60 Marina Hotel, across Clearwater Beach to Pier 60 and the Gulf. The pier runs straight out from the sand near the top of the frame. Between the hotel and the beach sit the road, the big Pier 60 parking lot and a line of palms, while the bar’s own tables and drinkers fill the bottom half of the picture. It is a fisheye lens, so the horizon bends at the edges. The operator calls this its sunset view, and late afternoon is when the sky over the water starts to change color. About Clearwater and Pier 60

Clearwater Beach sits on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, joined to the rest of Clearwater by the Clearwater Memorial Causeway over the Intracoastal Waterway. The sand runs for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) along the Gulf side, and a full marina lines the Intracoastal side. Pier House 60 stands between the two at 101 Coronado Drive, which is why one Crows Nest camera faces the beach and the other looks straight down on the boats. The mainland city had 117,292 residents at the 2020 census, and Sand Key, the next barrier island to the south, is a bridge away.

Pier 60 is a 329-meter (1,080-foot) fishing pier in the middle of the beach. Pier 60 Park, at its foot, has a playground, a snack bar and a souvenir shop, and it is the gathering point for the nightly sunset festival. The beach town was voted Florida’s Best Beach Town in a USA Today reader poll in January 2013, and Clearwater Beach took first place in TripAdvisor’s best beaches ranking for 2019.

Weather and Climate in Clearwater

Winters are mild. January averages a high of 22 C (71 F) and a low of 12 C (53 F). Spring warms quickly, and by April the high is 27 C (81 F) with a low of 17 C (63 F), still ahead of the wet season.

Summer is hot and humid. July averages 32 C (90 F) by day and 23 C (74 F) at night, and June through September is the wet season, when thundershowers build and the city’s annual 134 centimeters (52.6 inches) of rain is heaviest. October eases to a high of 29 C (84 F) and a low of 19 C (67 F). The Atlantic hurricane season covers summer and autumn, and a storm out in the Gulf can push heavy surf onto the beach. The Fish House Sunset camera, set right at the water’s edge, shows the waves best, while the main camera’s wide sky makes a squall moving in from offshore easy to spot.

Things to Do Near Clearwater Beach

Sunsets at Pier 60 is a festival held at the base of the pier every night of the year, weather permitting, from two hours before until two hours after sunset, with artisans and street performers. Walk far enough north along the sand and Clearwater Beach runs straight into Caladesi Island State Park, separated from it only by a welcome sign. Dr. Beach named Caladesi the best beach in the United States in 2008, and the park has a three-mile (4.8-kilometer) nature trail. A passenger ferry also runs there from a dock on Honeymoon Island.

On Island Estates, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium was home to Winter, the bottlenose dolphin who lost her tail to a crab trap line, swam with a prosthetic one and played herself in Dolphin Tale (2011) and Dolphin Tale 2 (2014). She died on November 11, 2021, aged 16. On the mainland, Moccasin Lake Nature Park protects 21 hectares (51 acres) around a 2-hectare (5-acre) lake, and BayCare Ballpark hosts the Philadelphia Phillies for spring training.
