Iisalmi Webcam – Rooftops and Forests of North Savo

The Iisalmi Webcam looks out over the rooftops of Iisalmi, a lake town in the North Savo region of central Finland, from a high point above its streets. The City of Iisalmi runs the camera on its own YouTube channel, and it moves between several views, all of them across the town toward a forested horizon. One takes in a white flat-roofed building with a tall band of narrow windows, red brick and pale yellow apartment blocks under hipped roofs, and a long straight road running off into the trees. Another swings round to a water tower standing on the skyline. Birch and spruce fill the gaps between the buildings, which makes the seasons easy to read here. By mid-October the birches across the view are bright yellow, and in midwinter the same blocks sit under snow in a few hours of low light.

About Iisalmi

Iisalmi lies about 87 kilometers (54 miles) north of Kuopio, in the Upper Savo sub-region of North Savo. It is a small city of 20,205 people (end of 2025) spread across 872 square kilometers (337 square miles), and 109 square kilometers (42 square miles) of that is water. The municipality holds 111 lakes, the largest of them Onkivesi, Haapajarvi, Porovesi and Nerkoo, and Lake Porovesi runs along the town’s east side. A parish was founded here in 1627, and Iisalmi received its town rights in 1891.

The oldest landmark in the center is the Kustaa Aadolf Church, completed in 1779. A few kilometers northeast of the center, the bridge over the Koljonvirta strait was the scene of a battle between Swedish and Russian forces in 1808, during the Napoleonic Wars. Iisalmi is also a brewery town. Olvi, one of Finland’s largest breweries, is based here, and the town is home to Kuappi, a cabin built in 1907 for Finnish State Railways track inspectors that Guinness World Records lists as the smallest restaurant in the world.

On camera, though, Iisalmi looks like everyday small-town Finland: four- and five-story apartment blocks among the trees, large flat-roofed buildings, car parks and a road heading out of town, with the forest starting where the streets end. The horizon is low and nearly flat, broken only by a few distant ridges. Neither of the views checked for this page in October 2026 showed the lake, the church or the harbor.

Weather and Climate in Iisalmi

Iisalmi has long, cold winters and short, mild summers. Ten years of reanalysis data for the town (2015 to 2024) put January highs at about -5°C (23°F) and nights at about -10°C (14°F), and daytime highs stay below freezing from December through February. Midwinter brings fewer than five hours of daylight at this latitude, so for most of a December day the camera shows streetlights, lit windows and snow on the roofs. Spring arrives late. April highs average about 6°C (43°F) with nights still around -3°C (27°F), and May reaches about 13.5°C (56°F).

Summer is the bright season. July highs average about 20°C (68°F) with nights near 13°C (55°F), and around midsummer the sun stays up for more than 20 hours, so the sky above the forest never gets fully dark. Autumn is quick. September highs fall to about 13.5°C (56°F) and October to about 6°C (43°F), which is when the view turns yellow and gold, and by November the average high is only about 1°C (34°F).

Things to Do Near Iisalmi

Most of Iisalmi’s sights are close to the center. Kuappi has a footprint of just 8 square meters (86 square feet), only 3.6 square meters (39 square feet) of it indoors, and a table for two. It has no kitchen, so its dishes come from the neighboring Olutmestari beer restaurant by the harbor. Olvi’s Brewery Museum, at the Olvi-Oluthalli restaurant next to the brewery, walks through the stages of brewing and shows beer-related objects more than a century old. The Juhani Aho Museum at Mansikkaniemi is the childhood home of Juhani Aho, one of Finland’s best-known writers.

The Kustaa Aadolf Church is worth a stop on any walk through the center. The Rukajarvi Center, a war history exhibition, is housed in the Hotelli Iisalmen Seurahuone, and the Koljonvirta battlefield and bridge make an easy trip northeast of town. Runni, west of Iisalmi, is one of the oldest spas still in use in Finland. In mid-July the Oluset music and beer festival, backed by Olvi, brings concerts to the town.
