The Kristianstad Webcam looks across Stora Torg, the main square of this town in Skane, southern Sweden, from a high point on its south-east side. The red brick town hall with its clock gable stands on the left, and behind it rises the green copper spire of Holy Trinity Church, which King Christian IV built for his new town. The long yellow front of Stora Kronohuset fills the right half of the frame, with a row of flagpoles before it and a water tower on the skyline. Parked cars, cyclists and people crossing the paving keep the square moving through the day, and the trees in the foreground mark the season, turning gold and brown in October. About Kristianstad and Stora Torg

King Christian IV of Denmark founded Kristianstad in 1614, and Stora Torg was laid out at the centre of the original town plan. For 400 years it has been the town’s formal square, ringed by the town hall, the church, the royal manor that later became the Regional Museum, and Stora Kronohuset, the base of the military presence in the town. The urban area had 41,198 residents in 2023. The town also holds Sweden’s lowest point, 2.41 meters (7.9 feet) below mean sea level.

Stora Kronohuset, completed in 1841, takes up the whole north side of the square. It is a neoclassical building whose architect is not known, and the Latin words LEGIBUS ET ARMIS, meaning “by laws and arms”, run across the top of its centre. They describe its first two tenants: the Court of Appeal for Skane and Blekinge in the eastern half, which moved to Malmo in 1917, and the staff of the Wendes Artillery Regiment in the western half. Military use of the building ended in 2001, and today it holds offices and a restaurant. An old cannon on a wheeled carriage stands on the paving in front of it, close to the arched entrance.

The town hall on the left is a late 19th century building made in imitation of Christian IV’s Renaissance style. A figure of the king stands in a niche on its facade, and a bronze copy of his 1643 bust is kept inside. Holy Trinity Church, about 125 meters (410 feet) west of the square’s centre, dates from 1618. In October 2026 part of the church was wrapped in scaffolding, which shows clearly on the camera. Guidebooks also place Palle Pernevi’s sculpture of a falling Icarus on Stora Torg, and the open metal figure in the low basin beside the flagpoles fits that description.

Things to Do Near Kristianstad

Holy Trinity Church is the first stop, a two-minute walk from the square and right opposite the train station. Its seven spiralled gables are visible from outside, and inside are carved pew ends more than 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and a gilded Baroque organ front from 1630. Back on the square, the Regional Museum occupies the old royal manor, and Stora Kronohuset has a restaurant among its offices. Tivoliparken, the town park, has avenues of horse chestnut and copper beech and a white Art Nouveau theatre.

Film is another part of the town’s story. Svensk Filmindustri began making films in Kristianstad in the 1910s before moving to Stockholm in 1920, and the old studio is now a museum. Kristianstad is also home to Vattenriket, a UNESCO biosphere reserve that reaches well beyond the town streets. The small town of Ahus lies about 15 kilometers (9 miles) south-east of Stora Torg.
