Thiersee Webcam – A Small Tyrolean Ski Hill at Schneeberg

The Baren-Sauser drag lift is the longest at 420 meters (1,378 feet), followed by the Biber-Flitzer plate lift at 400 meters (1,312 feet), the Hasen-Hupfer rope tow at 95 meters (312 feet) and the Igel-Express moving carpet at 75 meters (246 feet). Together they serve about 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) of groomed runs, and a snowmaking system backs up the natural snow.

Thiersee itself sits in the Kufstein district on the border with Bavaria. The municipality is made up of Almen, Hinterthiersee, Landl, Mitterland, Schmiedtal and Vorderthiersee, the main village, and counted 3,135 residents in 2021. By area it is the second-largest municipality in the district, larger than the city of Innsbruck, and its highest point is the Hinteres Sonnwendjoch at 1,986 meters (6,516 feet). The valley was first recorded in 1224 as Tyrsse and belonged to Bavaria until 1504.

The lake that gives the place its name lies about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) east of the lift station, at 616 meters (2,021 feet). It covers about 25 hectares (62 acres), reaches 12 meters (39 feet) at its deepest and has been a protected natural monument since 1930. On its shore stands the Passion Play house, built in 1926 with seats for about 1,000 people. The play goes back to a vow made in 1799 to keep war away from the valley and now returns roughly every six years. Between 1946 and 1952 Thiersee was also the center of Austrian film production, with 18 feature films shot at its studio, among them the 1950 Das doppelte Lottchen.

Averages for 2015 to 2024 at the slope’s elevation put January highs around 3 C (37 F) and lows near minus 8 C (18 F), with February only a little milder at about 6 C (42 F) by day. The slope sits roughly 184 meters (604 feet) above the lake, which regularly freezes from January to March and turns into an ice rink. Spring arrives in April with highs near 13 C (55 F) and nights around freezing, and the snow on the slope gives way to grass within weeks.

Autumn cools quickly. Highs drop from about 18 C (65 F) in September to 15 C (58 F) in October and 8 C (47 F) in November, when nights average minus 2 C (29 F).

Things to Do Near Thiersee

The lake is the summer draw. There is a lido on the north shore, rowing boats and pedal boats for hire, a campsite on the west shore and a promenade all the way around the water. The Passion Play house stands beside it, and every year on the fourth Sunday in October the valley holds its Leonhardiritt, a horseback procession first held in 1704.

The Pendling, at 1,563 meters (5,128 feet), rises on the boundary between Thiersee and Langkampfen and is known as Kufstein’s own mountain. From the car park at the Gasthof Schneeberg above Mitterland, a marked path reaches the top in about an hour and a half. Just below the summit, the Pendlinghaus, also called the Kufsteiner Haus, has stood at 1,537 meters (5,043 feet) since 1909. The forest road from the Gasthof Schneeberg past the Kala-Alm snack hut is a popular mountain bike route, and in winter the stretch to the Kala-Alm doubles as a toboggan run. Kufstein, with its old town and hilltop fortress above the Inn, is about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) east of Mitterland in a straight line.
