Dongdaemun Design Plaza sits right in the middle of Seoul’s Dongdaemun area, a neighborhood that’s always moving—day or night. It’s surrounded by late-night shopping centers, street vendors, and a mix of old alleyways and new high-rises. What makes this spot unique is how it sits right on top of history—literally. Parts of the old Seoul Fortress Wall run right next to it, and just beneath the surface are remnants of a sports stadium that used to be here.
The building itself is hard to miss. Designed by Zaha Hadid, it has this almost alien shape—curved, silver, and full of odd angles. It’s not just for show either. There are design exhibitions, fashion shows, and public events happening all the time. At night, the place transforms again, with its rose garden lit up by hundreds of LED flowers.
This part of the city feels different from the more touristy areas. It’s more local, more lived-in. There’s a stream nearby that cuts through the concrete—Cheonggyecheon—where people go to walk or take a break. And the side streets are packed with little shops and late-night snacks. Watching the webcam feels like people-watching without having to leave your chair.
