Cars pass underneath while people use the walkway above, crossing between buildings without ever stepping into traffic. The scene feels both historic and functional.
Morristown sits in east Tennessee, not far from the edge of the Smokies. The elevated sidewalks were built in the mid-20th century when downtown was trying to stay relevant as shopping centers pulled people elsewhere. Some towns let their centers fade out. Morristown tried something different – and the structure’s still here.
Depending on when you check, you might see foot traffic on the upper level, or maybe it’s just a few cars moving slowly through the light. The buildings on either side show some age, in a way that’s more real than polished. It’s the kind of view that doesn’t need a lot happening to tell you something about the place.
