This webcam is located on Beppu Tower, a 100 meter (328 feet) tall observation tower offering panoramic views of Beppu, a city in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan.
Beppu is best known as one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts, with the highest volume of hot spring water output in the country and the second highest in the world, after Yellowstone National Park in the United States. The city has eight major hot spring areas collectively known as the “Beppu Hattō.”
The eight hot spring areas include Beppu Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Kamegawa Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Shibaseki Onsen, Horita Onsen, and Hamawaki Onsen. Each offers different types of baths, from mud baths and steam baths to sand baths and ordinary hot spring baths.
A popular tourist activity is touring various hot spring sites known as “hells” (jigoku). These are not for bathing but are stunning to look at due to their unique colors, steam, and boiling water. Famous ones include Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), and Tatsumaki Jigoku (Geyser Hell).
