The Grand Marais Harbor Webcam looks over the small natural harbor of Grand Marais, Minnesota, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is a moving camera. Every five minutes it swings to a new preset, from a tight shot of the white lighthouse at the end of the breakwater to wide views across the bay, where sailboats ride at their moorings off a pebble beach. Between the lake views it turns inland to the downtown streets, with cars pulling in along the curb and people resting on the benches of a small planted park. About Grand Marais Harbor

Grand Marais is the county seat of Cook County, a town of 1,337 people at the 2020 census, sitting 188 meters (617 feet) above sea level. It lies 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Duluth and 61 kilometers (38 miles) southwest of the Canadian border. French Canadians gave it the name Grand Marais, meaning “great marsh”, which may refer to an old marsh or simply to the sheltered water. The Ojibwe name, Gichi-biitoobiig, translates as “great duplicate water” or “double body of water”.

Summer is mild rather than hot. July averages a high of 20.7 C (69 F) and a low of 10.9 C (52 F). October cools to a high of 9.8 C (50 F) and a low of 2.4 C (36 F), and in early fall the street trees and shrubs on the downtown presets turn red and orange. The operator singles out a wild “Gales of Superior” storm as one reason to keep the stream open. The town gets about 654 millimeters (25.75 inches) of precipitation a year.

The walk out to Artist’s Point and the lighthouse breakwater starts behind the Coast Guard station, beside a large parking lot in the center of town. Parts of the route along the rock and the breakwater wall are narrow, with no guard rails and water on both sides, so good shoes and steady footing help. Back on shore, the Cook County Historical Society museum in the old keeper’s house covers the area’s history, industry and culture. The Grand Marais Art Colony, the longest-lived art colony in Minnesota, opened in the summer of 1947, when Birney Quick of the Minneapolis School of Art brought a first class of twenty students north to paint outdoors. North House Folk School, founded in 1997, is also in Grand Marais.

Grand Marais is also where the Gunflint Trail begins. The paved road, County State-Aid Highway 12, leaves Highway 61 in town and runs 92 kilometers (57 miles) inland to Saganaga Lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, close to the Ontario border. It passes Poplar Lake, Gunflint Lake and Sea Gull Lake along the way, gives access to many of the wilderness entry points, and was designated a National Scenic Byway in 2009.
