Brasov Webcam – Watch Transylvania’s Crown City

The Brasov Webcam is a pan-tilt-zoom camera on a rooftop at Ceasu Rau, a crossroads in the new town of Brasov, in the heart of Romania. It does not hold a single view. Its operator, See Transylvania, has set it to move around the city, with stops on Tampa mountain, the old town seen from a distance, the citadel on Straja Hill and the AFI Brasov shopping center. One stop looks west along a tree-lined road busy with buses and cars, toward hillside streets of red-roofed villas, with the citadel’s pale walls on the ridge above. In mid-October the trees on those slopes were turning yellow and orange. A caption bar across the top of the picture shows the date and time.

About Brasov

Brasov stands at 538 meters (1,765 feet) in the Carpathians of central Romania. The 2021 census counted 237,589 people in the city and 371,802 in its metropolitan area, which makes it one of the larger cities in the country. Its old German name, Kronstadt, means Crown City. In the 1950s it was renamed Orasul Stalin (Stalin City), and trees on Tampa were cut so that the dictator’s name could be read on the slope facing the old town.

Ceasu Rau is in Centrul Nou, the new center, about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) northeast of Council Square. The AFI Brasov mall is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) east of the camera, and the citadel on Straja Hill, known locally as Cetatuia, is about 950 meters (0.6 miles) to the west. The citadel grew from a tower built in 1524. Its four-sided outer walls, with a bastion at each corner, were finished in 1631, and the well in its courtyard, rebuilt in 1625, is 81 meters (266 feet) deep.

Tampa is the mountain the city wraps around. It rises to 960 meters (3,150 feet), almost 400 meters (1,310 feet) above the streets, and most of it, 1.5 square kilometers (0.6 square miles), is a nature reserve. Bears live there, along with about 35 percent of Romania’s butterfly species.

Weather and Climate in Brasov

Brasov’s height keeps its summers milder than those of the Romanian plain. Modeled data for the city from 2015 to 2024 give July and August afternoon highs of about 25 to 26°C (77 to 78°F), with nights near 15°C (59°F). Early summer is the wettest time, and June is usually the rainiest month. Spring is slow to warm: April afternoons average about 15°C (58°F) and May about 19°C (66°F).

Autumn cools from about 21°C (70°F) in September to 15°C (59°F) in October and 9°C (48°F) in November, when the slopes in the camera’s view change color. Winters are cold. January averages a high of about 2°C (36°F) and a low near -5°C (22°F), and nights stay below freezing from December to February, so snow can settle on the red roofs. The Ghimbav weather station, just outside the city, records a January mean of -2.0°C (28.4°F) and about 600 millimeters (24 inches) of precipitation a year.

Things to Do Near Brasov

The old town lies about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) southwest of the camera. Council Square (Piata Sfatului) is its center, with the Council House, where the city was run for more than 500 years. The Black Church stands just off the square and is often described as the largest Gothic church in southeastern Europe. A short walk away is Rope Street (Strada Sforii), called the narrowest street in Romania.

A cable car climbs Tampa from Casa Padurarului at the foot of the mountain in under three minutes, rising 320 meters (1,050 feet) over a 573-meter (1,880-foot) route. From the top station a path runs behind the big Brasov sign to the rocky summit. Walkers can climb instead, by routes that include the Knights’ Road, which dates from the days of the Brasovia citadel. Further out, the Poiana Brasov ski resort is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of the old town in a straight line, and Bran Castle about 22 kilometers (14 miles).
