Corfu Webcam – Arillas Beach and the Diapontia Islands

The Corfu Webcam looks west over Arillas Bay on the northwest coast of the island, from the beach road between the Horizon Hotel and Thalassa restaurant. Rows of sunbeds and umbrellas run along the sand below it, a low concrete jetty reaches into the shallows on the right, and the open Ionian Sea fills the middle of the frame between the rocky Afionas promontory and the pale cliffs at the north end of the bay. The Diapontia islands, the westernmost corner of Greece, sit low on the horizon, and because the bay faces west, clear evenings end with the sun setting over the sea.

About Arillas, Corfu

Arillas is a small beach settlement on the outskirts of Magoulades, in the Municipality of North Corfu, roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) by road from Corfu Town. The bay lies between Agios Stefanos to the north and Agios Georgios to the south, and the hilltop village of Afionas stands on the promontory that closes its southern end. The beach is golden sand with shallow water near the shore, and according to the camera’s operator it changes shape and size almost every week with the wind, waves and currents. There are no large resort hotels, only small family-run places. The village has also become a base for yoga and meditation holidays.

About a mile off the beach lie three small islets, Gravia, Sykia and Gynaika. Further out toward Mathraki, a sail-shaped rock called Karavi, Greek for “boat”, is one of several Corfu rocks tied to the ship in Homer’s Odyssey that was turned to stone. The largest of the Diapontia islands beyond, Othonoi, covers 10.8 square kilometers (4.2 square miles) and had 457 residents in the 2021 census. At the far end of the north cliffs, the lone building that looks like a lighthouse was built in 1941 as an Italian military observatory. Weather and Climate in Corfu

Summers on Corfu are hot and mostly dry. Long-term Hellenic National Meteorological Service records at the island’s airport put July and August highs at 31 to 32 C (88 to 90 F), with nights close to 19 C (66 F). The sea peaks at about 25 C (77 F) in August. In summer the maistro, a northwesterly breeze, typically builds from around midday and eases toward sunset. On the camera that often means a flat, glassy bay in the morning and whitecaps and small breakers by late afternoon.

Winters are mild but wet. Corfu is far rainier than most Greek islands, averaging about 1,110 mm (44 inches) a year, and November and December are the wettest months at close to 190 mm (7.5 inches) each. January averages 14 C (57 F) by day and 5 C (41 F) at night, and the sea cools to about 15 C (59 F) from January through March. On stormy days the swell comes straight in off the open Ionian, and lines of breakers roll across the whole of Arillas beach. Spring warms gradually, with April highs near 19 C (66 F) and lows around 10 C (50 F).

Things to Do Near Arillas

Afionas, on the promontory at the south end of the bay, is a hilltop village of cobbled lanes and old mansions, with the church of Agios Ioannis Lampataris dating from 1636 and wide views over the Diapontia islands. A path of about 20 minutes leads from the village down to Porto Timoni, the twin beach where two coves sit back to back on a narrow neck of land, passing the ruins of medieval fortifications built against pirate raids.

In summer, boats to the islands on the horizon leave from Agios Stefanos, the next bay north. The 2026 service ran from mid-June to mid-September on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, taking about an hour and a half to Othonoi and returning the same afternoon.

Further down the west coast, Paleokastritsa has a monastery dating from 1225 and bays that tradition links to the spot where Odysseus met Nausicaa. On the cliff above them stands Angelokastro, a Byzantine castle 305 meters (1,000 feet) above the sea that held out against an Ottoman siege in 1537. Across the island, the old town of Corfu Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
