The Gangmun Beach Webcam looks out from the pine grove behind the sand at Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, on South Korea’s East Sea coast. Pine branches frame both edges of the picture, the pale beach runs across the lower part of the frame, and beyond it lines of surf roll in toward the shore, with a red navigation beacon standing in the water. About Gangmun Beach

Gangmun Beach sits in Gangmun-dong on the northern edge of Gangneung’s seafront, a few minutes on foot from the much busier Gyeongpo Beach. A stream flowing out of Gyeongpo Lake marks the boundary between the two: Gyeongpo lies north of the outlet and Gangmun south of it. The Sotdae Bridge spans the mouth of that stream and is lit up after dark, with a wishing spot halfway across where visitors toss coins at a jinttobaegi, the carved wooden bird pole that gives the bridge its name. At the beach’s southern end a shaded path through the pines leads toward Gangmunhang Port, a small fishing harbor lined with hoe restaurants serving sliced raw fish. The water off Gangmun is deeper than at its neighbor, which has made it a well-known diving spot, and the harbor dock draws anglers all year.

Scenes from the television series She Was Pretty were filmed here, and the sand is a regular stop for photographers who want the East Sea as a backdrop. Gyeongpo Beach next door stretches 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) along a sandbar between Gyeongpo Lake and the sea, with the Gyeongpodae pavilion about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) inland and downtown Gangneung about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away.

Gangneung itself is a city of about 208,000 people and the main hub of Korea’s east coast. Course 39 of the Haeparang Trail, the long-distance path along Korea’s east coast, passes straight through this frame. From the south it follows Anmok Coffee Street, the pine path along Songjeong Beach and then Gangmun Beach, before crossing to Gyeongpo Beach, the lakeside walk around Gyeongpo Lake and the Gyeongpodae pavilion. Anmok Coffee Street is the heart of Gangneung’s coffee culture and hosts the annual Gangneung Coffee Festival. Gyeongpo Lake is home to ducks, cormorants and egrets, and swans stop there on migration.

In the city, Ojukheon is the birthplace of the 16th-century painter Shin Saimdang and her son, the scholar Yi I, and is listed as Treasure No. 165. Chodang-dong, the district behind the beach, is known across Korea for its soft tofu, and mulhoe, a cold raw fish soup, is the dish to try at the harbor restaurants. Jeongdongjin, south of the city, is one of Korea’s best-known sunrise spots, and the Gangneung Danoje in early summer is described as the oldest festival in South Korea.
