It was first constructed next to one of the biggest hydroelectric facilities of its era and was finished in 1913 as part of the Keokuk-Hamilton Dam project. The lock is well known for having one of the largest lifts on the Mississippi, measuring about 38 feet (11.5 meters), which allows ships to sail through with ease.
