Nantucket Webcam – See the Cobblestones of Main Street

The Nantucket Webcam looks over lower Main Street, the cobbled square at the center of the island’s old whaling town. Fisher Real Estate, whose office is at 21 Main Street, streams two cameras over the street. The main view takes in a broad sweep of rounded cobbles with cars and pickups parked down the middle, brick sidewalks lined with benches, and a planter of flowers on a stone base standing in the roadway. A second tab looks along Main Street past the hanging sign of Murray’s Beverage Store. Shoppers cross between the stores all day, and the street trees mark the season, with the first orange leaves showing by mid-October.

What the Nantucket Webcam Shows

The Lower Main Street camera is the one in the player. It sits above the brick sidewalk and looks across the square to a red-painted building with white trim and a dormer in its roof, and to a pale gray building with tall shop windows on its corner. A narrower street leaves the square on the right, past a red No Entry sign, and another runs off to the left. In the middle of the cobbles stands the planter, an old horse trough that is now filled with flowers.

The Upper Main Street tab follows the street between rows of shingled and brick storefronts, with cars parked down the center of the cobbles and traffic passing on either side. The black hanging sign of Murray’s Beverage Store sits right beside the camera on the right, and trees line the sidewalk into the distance. Neither camera shows any water.

About Nantucket

Nantucket lies about 48 kilometers (30 miles) south of Cape Cod, an island of 124 square kilometers (47.8 square miles) that is its own combined town and county. The 2020 census counted 14,255 residents. The Wampanoag lived here long before Europeans arrived, as many as 3,000 people in groups governed by sachems, and English settlement began in 1659. Through the 18th and early 19th centuries the town grew rich on whaling, with Wampanoag men often making up half or more of a ship’s crew.

Main Street as it looks on camera was shaped by a disaster. Around 11 pm on July 13, 1846, a fire broke out in William Geary’s hat shop on Main Street. Fed by whale oil and lumber, it burned about a third of the town, some 250 buildings across 16 hectares (40 acres). It stopped short of the Pacific National Bank, built in 1818, which spared the grand homes of upper Main Street, and the Pacific Club at the foot of the street was damaged but survived. When the town rebuilt, Main Street and other streets were widened so a fire could not jump from one side to the other, and brick became the material of choice along the north side of Main Street. The width of the square in the frame dates from that rebuilding. The Nantucket Historic District became a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and was expanded to cover the entire island in 1975.

Weather and Climate in Nantucket

The Atlantic moderates Nantucket’s weather so strongly that the island has an oceanic climate, a type rarely found on the east coast of North America. January is the coldest month, with average highs of 4 C (40 F) and lows of minus 3 C (27 F), and winter storms can leave snow on the cobbles and benches. Spring warms slowly, and April averages 11 C (52 F) by day and 4 C (39 F) at night. July and August are the warmest months, with highs near 24 C (75 F) and lows around 17 C (63 F).

Autumn stays mild, with October highs of 17 C (62 F) and lows of 9 C (49 F), and the trees along Main Street change color through the month. Precipitation of about 1,040 millimeters (40.9 inches) a year is spread fairly evenly across the seasons, and outside summer flat gray light on the cobbles is common. The hottest day on record at Nantucket Memorial Airport reached 38 C (100 F) on August 2, 1975.

Things to Do Near Nantucket’s Main Street

The Nantucket Whaling Museum is in the same downtown, on Broad Street at the head of Steamboat Wharf. It occupies the Hadwen and Barney oil and candle factory, built by Richard Mitchell and Sons in 1847, the year after the fire, where the refining of whale oil into spermaceti candles is explained beside the factory’s massive lever press. In Gosnell Hall a sperm whale skeleton 14 meters (46 feet) long hangs from the ceiling.

Walk up Main Street past the Pacific National Bank to see the grand homes the 1846 fire never reached. Farther out, Brant Point Light stands on the point at Nantucket Harbor, a station established in 1746 whose present tower is the tenth light to stand there. The Jethro Coffin House on Sunset Hill Road is a National Historic Landmark, and the Maria Mitchell Association is among the island’s best known museums.
