About this webcam

The Naumburg Webcam looks across the Markt, the main square of Naumburg in Saxony-Anhalt, to the steep roof and tall Gothic windows of St. Wenzel, the town church. In front of the church stands a yellow building with four ornate dormers, and on the right a row of gabled townhouses in pink, orange, white and green runs back along a side street, with café parasols set out below them. The foreground is the square itself, a wide grid of pale paving slabs where people cut across, delivery vans pull up and market stalls go up on trading days. The camera is run by the town of Naumburg on its own YouTube channel.

About Naumburg’s Market Square and St. Wenzel

Naumburg stands where the Unstrut meets the Saale, about 130 meters (430 feet) above sea level, and its first written record dates from 1012. Around 33,000 people live here, and the hills around town are planted with vines as part of the Saale-Unstrut wine region. St. Wenzel, the church that fills the back of this frame, is the town’s main church outside the former cathedral precinct, and it stands right on the Markt.

A church on this site was first mentioned in 1228. In 1426 the town decided to replace it with something far larger, and the late Gothic building was consecrated in 1511 and finished in the spring of 1517, only to burn a few months later. Its tower reaches 72.5 meters (238 feet), the tallest in Naumburg, and unusually it belongs to the town rather than the church. Only its base shows on the webcam, above the nave roof. From 1527 until 1997, 33 tower keepers and three women in the same post served up there, living in an apartment 45 meters (148 feet) above the street and watching for fires. The town abolished the fire watch in 1892, and later tenants paid a low rent in return for looking after the tower clock and ringing the bells.

Inside is the organ that ties Naumburg to Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1743 Bach wrote a report for the town recommending a new instrument instead of repairing the old one, and Zacharias Hildebrandt built it with 53 stops and more than 3,200 pipes, reusing the acanthus-carved front of the earlier organ. Bach and the organ builder Gottfried Silbermann examined and accepted it on 27 September 1746. The church also holds a Baroque high altar from 1680 and paintings from the workshop of Lucas Cranach.

Weather and Climate in Naumburg

January highs average about 3 C (37 F) and lows about -1 C (30 F), so frost can settle on the paving and on the church roof. Spring comes on gradually. By April afternoons reach around 14 C (57 F), nights sit near 5 C (41 F), and the tree on the left comes into leaf. Precipitation is modest, about 535 millimeters (21 inches) a year.

Midsummer highs are near 24 C (75 F) in July, with lows around 14 C (57 F). October brings highs of about 14 C (57 F) and lows of 6 C (43 F). Daylight swings widely at this latitude, from under eight hours in late December to about sixteen and a half in late June, so on a winter afternoon the square is under lamplight from around 4 pm local time.

Things to Do Near Naumburg’s Market Square

Naumburg Cathedral stands about 500 meters (0.3 miles) northwest of the Markt, out of this camera’s view. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 and is known above all for the sculptures of the anonymous Naumburg Master, among them the much-admired founder figure of Uta. Back on the square, the climb up St. Wenzel’s tower ends at a public viewing platform 53 meters (174 feet) up, eight meters above the old tower keeper’s apartment, whose rooms you pass on the way. The Hohe Lilie, a house on the Markt at No. 18, holds the town museum.

A short walk away, the Marientor is the only one of the town’s five gates still standing, and its tower holds an exhibition on the old fortifications. From there the lane along the Jakobsmauer leads to the Nietzsche-Haus, one of six museums in Naumburg, where the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spent part of his youth. On the last weekend of June the town holds the Hussite Cherry Festival, timed for the cherry harvest, and the vineyards of the Saale-Unstrut region begin on the slopes just outside town.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you see on the Naumburg Webcam?

The camera looks across the Markt, Naumburg’s main square, to St. Wenzel church. A yellow building with four ornate dormers stands in front of the church, gabled townhouses and café parasols line the right side, and the paved square fills the foreground with pedestrians, parked vans and, on market days, stalls.

Where is Naumburg located?

Naumburg is in southern Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, where the Unstrut joins the Saale. Leipzig is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) to the northeast in a straight line. The camera is on the Markt in the old town.

Does the Naumburg Webcam show the cathedral?

No. Naumburg Cathedral is about 500 meters (0.3 miles) northwest of the Markt and is not in the frame. The church on the webcam is St. Wenzel, the town church on the square, whose tower is the tallest in Naumburg.

Is there a webcam at the Vogelwiese in Naumburg?

This camera does not show the Vogelwiese. It points across the Markt in the old town toward St. Wenzel, so anything happening away from the square is out of its view.

What is happening on Naumburg’s market square today?

The stream shows the square as it is right now, whether that means market stalls, café tables, a delivery round or an empty early morning. For planned events, check the town’s own calendar, because the webcam only shows the present moment.

What is the weather like in Naumburg?

Winters are cold and summers warm. January averages about 3 C (37 F) by day and -1 C (30 F) at night, July about 24 C (75 F) and 14 C (57 F), with roughly 535 millimeters (21 inches) of precipitation a year.

Can you watch the Naumburg Webcam at night?

Yes, the stream keeps running after dark. The picture then depends on the lamp posts on the square and the lit windows around it, so it is dimmer and grainier than by day. In late December the square is dark from around 4 pm local time.

Can you climb the tower of St. Wenzel in Naumburg?

Yes. The tower has a public viewing platform 53 meters (174 feet) up, eight meters above the apartment where the town’s tower keepers lived until 1997.
