The main South view looks across the apron, painted with red stand markings and yellow taxi lines, toward the apartment blocks of Nuuk on the horizon, with the sea and a line of low mountains beyond them. The North view, on the second tab, looks over a broad gravel infield and a fenced service road to the water of the fjord and the long ridge on its far shore. Air Greenland’s red aircraft can turn up on the apron between flights, and since the new runway opened in November 2024, wide-body jets land here as well. The light swings hard through the year, from a few hours of low winter sun to June nights that never get properly dark.

About Nuuk Airport

Nuuk Airport sits 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) northeast of the city center, at an elevation of 86 meters (283 feet). It opened on 1 October 1979 with a runway of just 950 meters (3,117 feet), long enough for turboprops but not for jets. For 45 years that meant international jet flights landed at Kangerlussuaq, farther north, and the capital was reached on smaller connecting planes.

That changed on 28 November 2024, when a new terminal and a 2,200 meter (7,218 foot) runway, designated 04/22, opened. The first aircraft to land on it was Tuukkaq, Air Greenland’s Airbus A330-800neo, and Nuuk is now the base for that jet and for the airline’s Dash 8 fleet. Air Greenland flies the A330 to Copenhagen, Icelandair connects Nuuk with Reykjavik-Keflavik, and United Airlines began a route from Newark on 14 June 2025. The airfield is unusually close to the rest of town. The runway lies about 700 meters (2,300 feet) from the campus of Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland, and an alpine ski course runs just 200 meters (660 feet) from the airport. Nuuk was founded by the missionary Hans Egede in 1728 and had 20,113 residents in January 2025, which makes it Greenland’s capital and largest town. October averages 2.3 C (36.1 F) by day and -1.8 C (28.8 F) at night, and its 80.5 millimeters (3.17 inches) of precipitation make it the wettest of those four months. The yearly total is about 853 millimeters (33.6 inches). Things to Do Near Nuuk Airport

The nearest outing is on the slopes. Nuuk’s ski area sits on Lille Malene mountain, with a vertical drop of about 300 meters (984 feet), and its taller neighbor Ukkusissaq, also called Store Malene, reaches 790 meters (2,590 feet) above the city. On a clear day the mountains around the fjord form the backdrop to both camera views, and farther out the peak of Sermitsiaq rises to 1,210 meters (3,970 feet).

The old center, about 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) southwest of the terminal, holds most of the sights. The Greenland National Museum displays the Qilakitsoq mummies. The Church of Our Saviour, Nuuk’s cathedral, was built in 1849 and given its tower in 1884, and the statue of Hans Egede stands close by. Katuaq, the cultural center designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, opened in 1997. Nuuk Art Museum is Greenland’s only private art and crafts museum.
