Polanow Webcam – Watch the Town Roundabout in Pomerania

The Polanow Webcam looks down on the main roundabout in Polanow, a small town in Koszalin County in Poland’s West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The camera sits high on the south side of the junction and points roughly north, across a round island planted with low shrubs to an Orlen fuel station with a red canopy and a wall of tall spruces behind it. On the right stands a long cream building with a red roof and flagpoles out front, the Urzad Miejski, or municipal office. Cars, delivery vans and trucks circle the island through the day, and zebra crossings cut across each approach. In mid-October the shrubs on the island have turned yellow, and a winter frame from the same camera shows snow along the verges and a tall Christmas tree standing in the middle.

About Polanow

Polanow lies on the Grabowa river, 37 kilometers (23 miles) from Koszalin, and covers just 7.37 square kilometers (2.85 square miles). Just under 3,000 people live in the town, and the 2016 count was 2,946. The roundabout on camera is where Koszalinska Street, the road heading northwest toward Koszalin, meets Wolnosci and Bobolicka streets, and both regional roads through the town, voivodeship roads 205 and 206, run around its island. On the left of the frame a street of older townhouses climbs away from the junction, with a tall mast on the skyline, while flowerbeds and yellow railings line the near side.

The town received its charter in 1313 under Lubeck law and was known for centuries by its German name, Pollnow. A castle stood here in the Middle Ages, and fires swept through in 1609, 1653 and 1736. In the 19th century a local glassworks exported to Denmark and Sweden, the railway arrived in 1903, and electricity followed in 1908. Soviet aircraft bombed Polanow in February 1945, and on 3 March a fire destroyed most of what was left, including the old town and the castle.

Swieta Gora Polanowska, the Holy Mountain, rises to 155.2 meters (509 feet) about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) southwest of town. Pilgrimage records on the hill go back to 1435, when Cistercian monks looked after the chapel on its summit. The church that later stood there was taken down over several decades from the early 17th century, and today a cross with an inscription in Polish and German marks the top. A trail lined with folk sculptures leads up the slope, Franciscan friars have kept a hermitage on the hill since 2002, and since 2013 it has been a stop on the Pomeranian Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.

Closer to the roundabout, the Zalew Polanowski reservoir lies about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) to the southeast. Roughly 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) east of the junction, the Czerwony Most, or Red Bridge, is a 120 meter (394 foot) steel railway viaduct from 1916 that spans the Grabowa valley and now carries walkers and cyclists as a footbridge with a viewpoint. In town, the Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1850, the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross went up in 1911 and 1912, and a water mill complex built between about 1850 and 1880 still stands.
