Alta Webcam – Watch the Grand Targhee Resort Plaza

The Alta Webcam looks across the base plaza at Grand Targhee Resort, the ski area above the small community of Alta on the Wyoming side of the Teton Range. Timber lodge buildings with green trim line both sides of the frame, with a post clock on the left and the Trap Bar on the right. Picnic tables fill the middle of the plaza, a chairlift terminal stands at its far end, and beyond it a ski run climbs the hill between dark conifers and pale aspen trunks. The camera faces uphill toward the lifts, so it is a quick way to judge how much snow is lying at the base before driving up. In early October the run is a dull green-brown, the aspens turn yellow, and rain can leave the paving shining.

About Alta and Grand Targhee Resort

Alta is a census-designated place in Teton County, Wyoming, with 429 residents at the 2020 census and an area of 21 square kilometers (8.3 square miles). It sits at 1,963 meters (6,440 feet), just east of the Idaho state line and about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of Driggs, Idaho. The road to the resort runs in from Driggs, so for most visitors Alta is reached through Idaho even though it lies in Wyoming.

Grand Targhee opened on December 26, 1969, inside Caribou-Targhee National Forest on the west slope of the Tetons. It averages about 500 inches (12.7 meters) of snow a year. The summit of Fred’s Mountain reaches 3,006 meters (9,862 feet), and the Grand Teton itself stands about 13 kilometers (8 miles) to the southeast. Six lifts serve the mountain, among them the Dreamcatcher chairlift to the summit.

The plaza is the heart of the base village. The Trap Bar and Grill, the Habitat shop and the Targhee and Teewinot lodges cluster around it at the western foot of the ski area. Weather and Climate in Alta, Wyoming

Winter is long at this altitude. Reanalysis data for 2015 to 2024 puts December to February highs at the plaza around -5 C (23 F) and lows near -11 C (12 F), and most of the year’s precipitation arrives as snow. Down in the valley, Alta’s weather station records a January average high of -1.7 C (29 F) and a low of -11 C (12 F) for 1991 to 2020, and about 113 inches (288 centimeters) of snow a year, a fraction of what the resort collects higher up. Spring arrives slowly: April highs at the base are still only about 3 C (37 F), and May reaches about 8 C (47 F).

Summer is short, dry and mild. July highs at the plaza average about 22 C (71 F) with nights near 11 C (52 F), while Alta in the valley reaches about 26 C (79 F) on a typical July afternoon. July is the driest month of the year. September highs drop back to around 16 C (60 F), and by October they are near 7 C (44 F), with lows just below freezing. Autumn is when the aspens on the hillside turn gold and the first snow can dust the slope before the lifts reopen.

Things to Do Near Alta and Grand Targhee

In summer the Dreamcatcher runs as a scenic chairlift to the top of Fred’s Mountain, where the view takes in the Tetons and reaches across Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Hikers can ride up and walk down on the Bannock Trail. Mountain bikers have more than 113 kilometers (70 miles) of trail at the resort, including about 27 kilometers (17 miles) of lift-served downhill and around 80 kilometers (50 miles) of cross-country riding. Each August the resort hosts the Targhee Bluegrass Festival.

Driggs, about 20 minutes west by car, is the county seat of Teton County, Idaho, with 1,984 residents in 2020. It sits at 1,873 meters (6,145 feet) in Teton Valley, at the headwaters of the Teton River, and has a geotourism center, an art gallery and the Driggs-Reed Memorial Airport, whose runway is 2,225 meters (7,300 feet) long. Jackson and Grand Teton National Park lie on the far side of the range, about 68 kilometers (42 miles) away over Teton Pass.
