Boppard Webcam – Watch the Bopparder Hamm Rhine Loop

The Boppard Webcam looks down from the Gedeonseck, a viewpoint high on the hill above Boppard, onto the Bopparder Hamm, where the Rhine swings through the largest loop on its course. The camera pans between preset views: the steep vineyards of the Hamm with the railway and the B9 road squeezed along their foot, the bend itself with Filsen across the water, the Sonneneck campsite and Osterspai further down the loop, and Boppard’s riverfront with the twin towers of St. Severus. Barges are often in the channel, and passenger boats tie up along the town’s promenade. A second tab switches to the operator’s railcam at Hirzenach, a district of Boppard upstream of the town, where trains on the left-bank line pass right below the lens.

About Boppard

Boppard sits on the left bank of the Rhine at 74 meters (243 feet) above sea level, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) upstream from Koblenz, inside the Upper Middle Rhine Valley that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 2002. The town counted 15,665 residents at the end of 2025, spread over 74.88 square kilometers (28.91 square miles) that take in hill villages and riverside districts such as Hirzenach. Its story starts with the Roman settlement of Baudobriga and a late Roman fort. The Basilica of St. Severus, dated to 1236 and built in late Romanesque style on the foundations of a Roman military bath, is the pair of pointed towers that stands out when the camera zooms in on the town. Nearby, the Electoral Castle, expanded after 1312 by Archbishop Baldwin of Trier, now holds the municipal museum.

The Bopparder Hamm takes its name from the Latin hamus, a hook, and the river traces that hook for about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), from Rhine kilometer 571.5 to 576.5 between Boppard and Spay. On the left bank, about 75 hectares (185 acres) of vines face south on slate slopes steeper than 80 percent, the largest continuous vineyard area in the Middle Rhine wine region. Riesling has been by far the main grape since the vineyards recovered from phylloxera in the late 19th century, with Rivaner (Mueller-Thurgau) and Pinot Noir in smaller plots. Named sites include Feuerlay, Mandelstein and Ohlenberg, and one of the camera’s presets frames the little Mandelstein hut among the rows.

The Hirzenach camera stands about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the Loreley rock, in a district known for its former Benedictine provostry and the Church of St. Bartholomew, possibly begun soon after 1110. It looks across the double-track railway and the B9 to the river and the steep, wooded slope of the far bank, where old terrace walls still show through the trees. On March 15, 2021, this camera recorded a huge rockslide on that opposite bank near Kestert, and the salvage and safety work there took more than half a year.

Weather and Climate in Boppard

Winter highs in Boppard run around 5 to 7 C (41 to 45 F), with nights near 1 C (34 F) in January and February. Snowfall is light, about 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) across a whole year, so a white Hamm is an occasional sight rather than a season. Spring warms quickly, from 11 C (52 F) highs in March to 19 C (66 F) in May, and April is the driest month at about 35 millimeters (1.4 inches) of rain.

Summer brings highs of 23 C (73 F) in June and 26 C (79 F) in July, with July nights around 15 C (59 F), and the slopes of the Hamm stay a dense green. Autumn starts warm at 21 C (70 F) in September and drops to 9 C (48 F) by November, as the leaves on the slopes turn yellow and rust. December is the wettest month at about 68 millimeters (2.7 inches), part of roughly 655 millimeters (25.8 inches) a year. At low water the river pulls back from both shores of the bend and leaves wide, pale banks of sand and gravel, which is how the camera showed it in early October 2026.

Things to Do Near Boppard

Boppard’s chairlift climbs the slope to the Vierseenblick in a ride of about 20 minutes, and from the top the hills cut the winding river into what looks like four separate lakes. A walk of roughly 500 meters (1,640 feet) leads on to the Gedeonseck, the viewpoint beside the camera, where a panorama restaurant that partners with the stream looks straight down the loop.

The Hunsrueckbahn climbs out of Boppard onto the Hunsrueck plateau, and among the railways still running in Germany only two are steeper. Upstream in Hirzenach, the Church of St. Bartholomew of the old provostry makes a quiet stop on the way south to the Loreley rock, about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) beyond.
