Amsterdam Webcam – Central Station’s Busy Waterfront

The Amsterdam Webcam looks west along the IJ from the roof of the Movenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre, a 20-floor tower on the Piet Heinkade waterfront. The arched train sheds of Amsterdam Central Station sit on the left of the frame, the A’DAM Tower and the high-rises of the north bank rise on the right, and the water between them carries ferries, barges and tour boats. The flat roof directly below the lens belongs to the Bimhuis jazz club. A second camera on the same roof, in the IJ-Haven tab, turns east toward Java-eiland and the quay below the hotel. Both lenses are fisheye, so the horizon bends at the edges, and after dark the station and the north bank light up across the water.

About Amsterdam Central Station and the IJ

The IJ is the broad stretch of water between central Amsterdam and Amsterdam-Noord, and Central Station stands right on its edge. The station opened on 15 October 1889 to a design by Pierre Cuypers, and it was built on three artificial islands in the IJ, resting on 8,687 wooden piles. Its original roof spanned almost 45 meters (148 feet) on 50 curved trusses, and that long arched shed is the shape to look for on the left of the main camera. Around 192,000 passengers passed through it each day in 2018, in a city that had 941,873 residents at the start of 2026.

The camera’s own building is much newer. The Movenpick hotel went up in 2006 on the Piet Heinkade, east of the station on the way to the Eastern Docklands. Its neighbor is the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, a concert hall for contemporary classical music designed by the Danish firm 3XN and opened in 2005 above the IJtunnel. The Bimhuis, the jazz venue whose dark roof fills the bottom of the main frame, is part of the same complex. From 20 floors up, the camera looks over all of it, down the IJ to the station and the church spires of the old center on the horizon.

The A’DAM Tower stands on the north bank opposite the station, with newer apartment towers beside it and lower housing running along the shore to the right. The IJ-Haven tab shows the other direction: the wide eastern stretch of the IJ, a grassy pier, the waterside streets of Java-eiland and the quay directly below the hotel, where long river cruise ships regularly tie up.

Weather and Climate in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a mild, damp maritime climate, and on this camera the sky usually changes before the water does. Winters are cool rather than cold: January afternoons reach about 6 to 7 C (43 to 45 F) and nights fall to around 2 C (36 F). Spring warms slowly, with April highs near 13 C (56 F) and lows around 5 C (41 F). July is the warmest month, with afternoons near 22 C (72 F) and nights around 14 C (57 F). October still manages about 15 C (59 F) by day and 9 C (48 F) at night.

Rain is spread through the year rather than packed into one season. The city averages about 838 millimeters (33 inches) a year, with at least 1 millimeter falling on around 133 days. On the camera that means fast-moving cloud over a flat skyline, and bright spells that come and go. Snow is uncommon and rarely lasts on the quays. Summer light lingers late into the evening, while in December the lights on the north bank come on before the evening rush.

Things to Do Near Amsterdam Central Station

The easiest trip from this view is across it. GVB ferries leave from the waterfront behind Central Station and are free for foot passengers and cyclists. The F3 to Buiksloterweg runs 24 hours, every 4 to 8 minutes through the day, and the crossing takes three or four minutes, which puts the A’DAM Tower a short walk from the landing. The F2 heads to IJplein instead, every quarter hour, landing on the residential north bank that fills the right side of the frame.

Back on the south side, the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ and the Bimhuis sit at the foot of the camera, with contemporary classical concerts in the main hall and jazz next door. Central Station is worth walking through for Cuypers’ facade and the arched sheds behind it. From its front, the 17th-century canal ring, the Grachtengordel, is a short walk south. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2010, and it is the part of the city this camera does not show. East of the hotel, the quays of Java-eiland make an easy walk beside the water the IJ-Haven camera looks over.
