About this webcam

The Marveld Recreatie Webcam looks out over the central play field of Marveld Recreatie, a holiday park, campsite and hotel on the south-eastern edge of Groenlo in the Achterhoek, eastern Netherlands. Mounted high above the field, the camera turns between a fenced animal paddock, a wide lawn crossed by gravel paths, a round play area with a yellow tube slide, and a wooden climbing structure, with dark bungalow roofs showing through the tall trees behind. Because it moves between several views, the frame you open on may not match the one a few minutes later. On a summer afternoon the lawn fills with children running between the playgrounds. On a grey winter morning the same field can sit nearly empty under bare branches, which is when the bungalows and footpaths beyond it show most clearly.

About Marveld Recreatie

Marveld Recreatie sits at Elshofweg 6, about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the center of Groenlo, on flat grassland beside the Slinge river. The ANWB camping guide lists the grounds at 45 hectares (111 acres), with 320 touring pitches, 120 seasonal pitches and 388 rental accommodations, and the park is open all year. Next to the bungalows and the campsite, Marveld runs Hotel Havezate, an aparthotel on the edge of the park.

The water park is the biggest draw. Its slides include the Crazy Cone funnel slide, built by Van Egdom in 2012, and the Anaconda, Cobra and Mamba Bowl slides by Polglass, which opened in 2021 together with the Wild River, a rapids ride of about 100 meters (330 feet). A subtropical pool, a heated outdoor pool and a spray park for younger children complete the complex. The rest of the park adds a bowling alley, indoor tennis and squash courts, a fishing pond, a wellness area with a sauna and jacuzzi, and a small animal meadow, which is most likely the paddock in the foreground of the camera’s left-hand views.

Groenlo itself is a former fortress town of 9,860 people (2021). Since 2005 it has been part of the municipality of Oost Gelre, formed when Groenlo merged with neighboring Lichtenvoorde. The town changed hands repeatedly during the Eighty Years’ War: Maurice of Nassau took it in 1597, Spanish troops under Spinola won it back in 1606, and Frederick Henry besieged and captured it in 1627. A defensive canal and the remains of 16th and 17th century bulwarks survive around the old center. Groenlo is also where the Grolsch brewery started in 1615, and beer was brewed in the town until 2004, when production moved to Boekelo.

Weather and Climate in Groenlo

Ten years of reanalysis data for the park (2015 to 2024) put winter highs at 6 to 8 C (43 to 46 F) from December to February, with nights around 1 to 3 C (34 to 37 F), so frost can whiten the lawn on clear mornings. Spring warms steadily, with average highs of 14 C (57 F) in April and 19 C (66 F) in May, when the trees around the field come back into leaf. July and August are the warmest months, with highs near 23 C (73 F) and nights around 14 C (58 F), and that is when the play areas on the Marveld Recreatie Webcam are at their busiest.

Autumn cools from highs of 20 C (68 F) in September to 15 C (59 F) in October and 10 C (49 F) in November, and the trees framing the field turn yellow and bronze through October. Rain is spread across the whole year, about 880 millimeters (35 inches) in total, with the wettest months, at around 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) each, in midwinter and high summer. Long June evenings keep the field in daylight late, while in December it is dark by late afternoon.

Things to Do Near Marveld Recreatie

Plenty of guests never leave the grounds. Besides the pools and the playgrounds on camera, the park has Bommelwereld, a newer attraction park for children and adults, plus the bowling alley, the tennis and squash courts and the fishing pond. In winter an ice rink opens, with skates for hire on site, and a supermarket on the park covers day-to-day shopping.

The old center of Groenlo is an easy walk or bike ride away. Follow the line of the former fortifications, where the canal and the bulwark remains still trace the shape of the town’s defenses, and step inside the Sint-Calixtusbasiliek, the town’s Catholic basilica. Lichtenvoorde, the other main town of Oost Gelre, is the next town over.

Bungalow roofs show through the trees in the background.

Does the Marveld Recreatie Webcam show the swimming pool?
