Fort-Mahon-Plage Webcam – See the Picardy Coast Beach

The Fort-Mahon-Plage Webcam is mounted on the lifeguard station at the seafront esplanade of Fort-Mahon-Plage, a small resort on the Picardy coast of northern France, and faces the English Channel. It is a motorized 4K camera, so the picture moves between four views: the esplanade with its red-paved plaza, the north and south seawalls lined with three-story seafront houses, and the open beach running down to the water. The tide changes the scene more than anything else. At low water a wide sheet of wet sand reaches out toward the surf, with walkers spread across it and kites over the breakers on windy days. At high tide the sea comes in close to the dunes and the foot of the seawall, and the beach shrinks to a narrow strip.

About Fort-Mahon-Plage

Fort-Mahon-Plage is a commune in the Somme department of the Hauts-de-France region, about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) south of Berck and 32 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of Abbeville. The Authie River reaches the sea in the Baie d’Authie at the north end of town, and the bay forms the border between the Somme and the Pas-de-Calais. Behind the beach lies the Marquenterre, a stretch of dunes, pine woods and damp dune hollows between the Authie and Somme estuaries.

The resort is young. Tourism began at the end of the 19th century, the seafront boulevard opened in 1899, and the commune was only created on 30 December 1922, when it was split off from neighboring Quend. It had 1,363 residents in 2023 on 13.04 square kilometers (5.03 square miles) of land, and it has been officially classed as a seaside resort since 2007. Nobody is sure where the name comes from. There has never been a fort on this shore, and the suggested origins range from the port of Mahon on Minorca to “ech mahon”, the Picard word for poppy.

The camera belongs to the town. The local computer club, the Club Informatique de Fort-Mahon, set up the project with the town hall in 2015, using an Axis Q6318-LE PTZ dome installed on the lifeguard station. A Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station has stood on the same roof since 11 April 2016 (the unit was replaced in March 2023), and its temperature, wind and UV readings appear on the operator’s site beside the video. The lens has no wiper, so rain, blown sand and sea spray can smear the picture until municipal staff clean it.

Weather and Climate in Fort-Mahon-Plage

The coast here has a mild oceanic climate. The 1991 to 2020 averages for Le Touquet, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) up the coast, give January highs around 8°C (46°F) and lows near 3°C (37°F). Spring warms slowly, with April highs around 14°C (57°F) and nights near 6°C (43°F). July averages highs of 21°C (70°F) and lows of 14°C (57°F), so summer days on this beach are pleasant rather than hot. October holds on to some warmth, with highs near 16°C (61°F) and lows around 9°C (48°F).

Le Touquet records about 889 millimeters (35 inches) of rain a year and roughly 1,710 hours of sunshine. Summer usually brings the busiest picture, with people spread along the sand below the seawall. Autumn and winter are emptier and windier, often with the wind out of the southwest, and sea mist can hide the far end of the beach for hours before clearing in the afternoon. In midwinter the sun stays low over the Channel, and the esplanade lamps are on by late afternoon.

Things to Do Near Fort-Mahon-Plage

The resort’s biggest attractions sit just behind the seafront. The Aquaclub de Belle Dune is a wave pool that opened in 1985, and the Golf de Belle Dune started with 9 holes in 1989 and grew to 18 holes in 1992. The town’s nautical center runs sailing and sand yachting, which needs exactly the kind of wide, flat sand the camera shows at low tide. Fort-Mahon-Plage also has a casino, a cinema and a media library for rainy days.

The nature around the town is the real draw. The salt marshes of the Baie d’Authie are a stopover for migrating waders and ducks, and both common seals and grey seals live in the bay all year. The Conservatoire du Littoral owns land near the bay that is open to walkers. South of town, the Parc du Marquenterre at Saint-Quentin-en-Tourmont is a 260-hectare (642-acre) bird reserve of dunes, pine forest, wetland and marsh. Since 20 July 2020, Fort-Mahon-Plage has been part of the Baie de Somme Picardie Maritime regional nature park, and Berck-sur-Mer is just across the Authie bay to the north.
