About this webcam

The Cannes Webcam looks west along the Boulevard du Midi, the seafront road on the western side of Cannes that runs toward La Bocca and Mandelieu-La Napoule. From a raised spot above the road, the camera takes in the white balustrade, a row of parked cars and the painted cycle lane in the foreground, a narrow strip of beach below, and a long, low jetty running out into the bay. Open sea fills the left of the frame. On the right, the coast curves away to the hills of the Esterel massif, with buildings along the shore at their foot. This is western Cannes, well away from La Croisette, and the view changes with the season: sunbathers on the sand in summer, an empty beach in winter.

About Cannes

Cannes is a city of 74,350 people (2023 figure) on the Alpes-Maritimes coast of the French Riviera, covering 19.62 square kilometers (7.58 square miles). Most visitors know its eastern half: the Palais des Festivals, home of the film festival, and the hotels and beach clubs of La Croisette. This camera faces the other way. Past the port, the Boulevard du Midi follows the shore west toward La Bocca, a district with its own railway station, Cannes-la-Bocca, right beside the beach. The camera looks along the western section, Boulevard du Midi Louise Moreau.

The public beaches of the Midi run for nearly 700 meters (2,300 feet), hold the Blue Flag award, and have lifeguards in the high season. Private beach clubs share the rest of the boulevard.

Across the water rise the hills of the Esterel, a volcanic massif of rhyolite, the rock that gives its cliffs and ridges their red color. The massif covers 320 square kilometers (124 square miles), and its highest point, Mont Vinaigre, reaches 618 meters (2,028 feet). Mandelieu-La Napoule and Cannes are its neighbors to the east, and the Corniche d’Or coast road runs along its edge between Cannes and Saint-Raphael.

Weather and Climate in Cannes

Cannes has a Mediterranean climate and about 2,743 hours of sunshine a year, based on the 1991 to 2020 averages for the city’s weather station. Summer is hot and mostly dry. July and August highs average 28 to 29°C (83 to 84°F), with nights around 19°C (66°F), and that is when the beach below the camera is at its busiest. Autumn stays mild: October brings average highs of 21°C (70°F) and lows of 12°C (54°F). Annual rainfall comes to 881 millimeters (34.7 inches).

Winter is short and cool rather than cold. January averages a high of 14°C (57°F) and a low of 4°C (39°F), and on clear winter days the Esterel can stand out sharply across the bay. Spring warms steadily, with April highs around 18°C (65°F) and lows of 9°C (48°F). Because the camera faces west, the late-afternoon sun shines across the water toward the lens, and in the evening the sky over the hills is often the brightest part of the frame.

Things to Do Near the Boulevard du Midi in Cannes

The beach itself is the main draw on this stretch. Two volleyball courts at 16 Boulevard du Midi are free to use all year round, and the Square Mistral across the road has play structures and a petanque ground. Buses stop along the boulevard at Midi Nadine, Mistral Jean Hibert and Midi College International. Walk east and the road brings you to the port and to Le Suquet, the old town on its hill, where the fortified tower and the Chapelle Sainte-Anne house the Musee des Explorations du Monde. Le Suquet is also one of the best places to look out over La Croisette.

From Cannes harbor, boats reach Ile Sainte-Marguerite, one of the two large Lerins Islands, in about 15 minutes. Its fort held the Man in the Iron Mask for a time, and his cell can be visited in what is now the Musee de la Mer. Neighboring Ile Saint-Honorat is home only to Cistercian monks of the Lerins monastery, founded around 410, who make red and white wine, honey, lavender oil and Lerina, a herbal liqueur. To the west, the Corniche d’Or follows the red rocks of the Esterel toward Saint-Raphael.
