About this webcam

The Poiana Brasov Webcam streams from Cabana Postavarul, a mountain hut at 1,604 meters (5,262 feet) on the Postavarul massif, high above the Poiana Brasov ski resort in Transylvania. The camera moves between several preset views. The widest is a panorama over spruce forest and folded ridges toward a long mountain range on the horizon. Others look down onto the hut’s timber terrace, with its picnic tables and flower boxes, and across to an older half-timbered building on a rock outcrop. In winter, the operator says, skiers and snowboarders on the Lupului run come into view beside the hut, and a corner panel tracks which runs are open.

About Poiana Brasov

Poiana Brasov sits at about 1,020 meters (3,346 feet), 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) by road from the center of Brasov. The ski area climbs from there to 1,799 meters (5,902 feet) at the top of Postavarul. A modernization in the 2010s grew the skiable terrain from 50 to 80 hectares (124 to 198 acres) and the marked runs from 13.8 to 23.9 kilometers (8.6 to 14.9 miles), spread over 12 trails served by two aerial tramways, a gondola, two chairlifts and five ski lifts. In 2013 the resort hosted the alpine skiing, figure skating and short track events of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival.

The hut on camera stands 584 meters (1,916 feet) above the resort base, on the northern side of the massif. The Transylvanian Carpathian Society (SKV) built it between April 1881 and October 1883 and named it the Schulerhutte, after Schuler, the Saxon name for the mountain. It became the Julius Romer-Hutte in 1935, honoring Dr. Julius Romer, a member of the society, and Romanian sources describe it as the oldest mountain shelter still in use in the Carpathians. The camera’s own description ties the German name to the Brasov school founded by Johannes Honterus in 1543, whose students made a yearly August trip up the mountain until 1716.

Weather and Climate in Poiana Brasov

At the hut’s height, winter is long and cold. January averages about -7 C (19 F), with daytime highs near -4 C (25 F) and nights around -10 C (14 F). A snow cover of 50 to 60 centimeters (20 to 24 inches) usually lasts from mid-November to mid-March, about 120 days a year, and that is when the terrace turns white and, as the operator puts it, skiers and snowboarders on Lupului pass the camera. March still averages below freezing at the hut, around -2 C (28 F), and April highs only reach about 7 C (45 F).

Summer is mild and wet. July and August highs at the hut are around 18 C (64 F), with nights near 10 C (50 F), while the resort averages about 17 C (63 F) in July. June is the wettest month, with roughly 170 millimeters (6.7 inches) of rain at this altitude. Autumn is the most colorful season on the panorama view: in early October the broadleaf trees scattered through the dark spruce turn yellow and orange. September highs fall to about 14 C (57 F), October to about 9 C (48 F), and November averages close to freezing at 0 C (32 F).

Things to Do Near Poiana Brasov

The hut itself is the obvious first stop. Cabana Postavarul runs a restaurant and the terrace on camera, and rents rooms to skiers and hikers who want to stay on the mountain overnight. In season the black Lupului run passes the hut, and the status panel on the stream names the other runs worth knowing: Drumul Rosu (red and blue, not for first-timers), Sulinar (red), Ruia and Subteleferic (both black), and Bradul, the blue slope for beginners at the resort base.

Brasov is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) below, about 20 minutes by car or 30 minutes on bus line 20, with tickets sold at the Livada Postei stop in the city. Its old town centers on Piata Sfatului, the main square, which See Transylvania also covers with a live camera. Further out, the same operator streams from Bran Castle, sold to visitors as Dracula’s Castle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Poiana Brasov located?

Poiana Brasov is a ski resort in Brasov County, in the Transylvania region of central Romania, 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) by road from the city of Brasov. The camera is higher up, at Cabana Postavarul on the northern side of the Postavarul massif, about 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) south of the resort.

What can you see on the Poiana Brasov Webcam?

The camera pans between preset views around Cabana Postavarul: forested ridges and a distant mountain range, the hut’s terrace and timber decks, the spruce slope behind it, an older half-timbered building and a yellow cable car cabin standing on the deck. The caption bar shows Romanian time, three hours ahead of UTC in summer and two in winter.

Does the Poiana Brasov webcam show the Lupului slope?

The stream is named after Lupului, the black run that passes the hut, and the operator says skiers and snowboarders on it come into view in winter. Lupului is 2,605 meters (8,547 feet) long and 28 meters (92 feet) wide. Outside the ski season the camera spends its time on the terrace and the mountain panorama.

Can you check which Poiana Brasov slopes are open on the webcam?

Yes, in outline. A panel in the lower left of the stream lists the six main runs with their difficulty color and a status mark, plus the snow depth at the top of Postavarul and at the resort base and the time of the last update. In early October every run carried a closed mark.

Does this webcam show the gondola, the teleferic or the Bradul slope?

No. None of the preset views checked for this page shows a working lift line, so the gondola and the two aerial tramways stay out of frame. The yellow cabin on the terrace is a cable car cabin standing on the deck, not a moving lift. Bradul, the beginners’ slope, is down at the resort base and out of sight, although the status panel still lists it.

How high is Cabana Postavarul?

Cabana Postavarul stands at 1,604 meters (5,262 feet). That puts it 195 meters (640 feet) below the 1,799 meter (5,902 foot) top of the ski area on Postavarul.

What is the weather like in Poiana Brasov?

Winters are cold and snowy: January averages about -4 C (25 F) at the resort and -7 C (19 F) at the hut. Summers are mild, with July highs around 18 C (64 F) at the hut, and June is the wettest month.

When is ski season in Poiana Brasov?

Snow cover of 50 to 60 centimeters (20 to 24 inches) usually lasts from mid-November to mid-March, about 120 days a year. Opening dates depend on the snow, so the status panel on the stream is a quick way to see whether the runs are marked open before heading up.
