About this webcam
The Codlea Webcam looks down Promenada Codlea, the paved pedestrian square in the center of this Transylvanian town, toward the wooded slopes of Magura Codlei. A road with a red-and-white zebra crossing runs across the foreground, a line of cars parks nose-in along the near edge of the square, and a small wooden kiosk stands out on the paving. On the right, a long pink-and-cream building with tall windows sits behind a row of clipped trees, and a bare square stone tower rises at the far end. The stream comes from the Primaria Codlea Live channel and carries extras: a weather panel, an inset that cycles through old postcards of the town, a live inset from a second camera, and a scrolling Romanian caption about local history. In October the trees along the promenade turn yellow and orange against the hill.
About Codlea
Codlea lies in Brasov County at the western edge of the Burzenland, the historic region around Brasov, and also goes by its German name, Zeiden. The town stands at 561 meters (1,841 feet), about 13 kilometers (8 miles) west-northwest of Brasov’s old town in a straight line. The 2021 census counted 20,534 residents, down from 21,708 in 2011. Codlea was long called the city of flowers for its flower growing, and the caption on the stream recalls the Sere Codlea greenhouses, famous in their day and bankrupt after 2000.
The town’s best-known building is its fortified Lutheran church, the Kirchenburg von Zeiden, which stands on the central square at Strada Lunga 113, just south of the promenade. Begun in the 13th century and rebuilt as a Gothic hall church in the 15th, it is the largest fortified church in the Burzenland. Its polygonal ring wall, raised after 1420, is 8 to 10 meters (26 to 33 feet) high and 2 meters (6.6 feet) thick, and the walls of the massive bell tower reach 5 meters (16 feet). Inside are a painted ceiling of 252 panels from the early 18th century and an organ built in 1783. An EU-funded restoration ran from 2014 to 2020.
Magura Codlei, the forested hill behind the square, rises to 1,294 meters (4,245 feet) just west of the town. In the 13th century the Teutonic Order built a castle on its slopes, the Schwarzburg or Black Castle, first recorded by name in 1265 and rebuilt for the last time in 1432 by the town’s craft guild. Its sparse remains lie at about 980 meters (3,215 feet) on the southwestern slope and are almost completely overgrown.
Weather and Climate in Codlea
Codlea has cold winters and warm summers. Modeled averages for 2015 to 2024 give January highs near 2°C (35°F) and lows around -6°C (21°F), so frost and snow can whiten the parked cars, the square and the slopes of Magura Codlei in midwinter. February is the driest month, with about 40 millimeters (1.6 inches) of precipitation. Spring warms fast: April averages 14°C (58°F) by day and 3°C (37°F) at night, and by May highs reach 18°C (65°F).
Early summer is the wettest time of year. June brings about 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain, the most of any month, and July and August highs average 25°C (77°F) with nights near 14°C (57°F). Autumn cools steadily, from 21°C (69°F) highs in September to 15°C (59°F) in October and 9°C (47°F) in November, when nights dip to around freezing. By mid-October the trees along the promenade and on the hill have turned yellow and orange. The weather panel in the top corner of the stream shows the current temperature and a three-day outlook.
Things to Do Near Codlea
The fortified church is the first stop in town, a short walk from the square on camera. Beside it, the former town hall, built against the church’s bell tower in 1828 to 1830, now houses the Museum of Codlea Traditions on Strada Magurii, and the Casa de Cultura, the town’s culture house, stands next door at Strada Lunga 111. For a longer outing, routes climb from the town to the summit of Magura Codlei, about 730 meters (2,400 feet) above the square, and a loop of about 18 kilometers (11 miles) takes in the Schwarzburg ruins and the Stancile Calaretului rocks.
Brasov’s old town, with Piata Sfatului at its heart, is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) away and makes the obvious base for a stay. Rasnov Citadel sits on its hill about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Codlea, and Bran Castle is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) to the south-southwest, both measured in a straight line. Poiana Brasov, the ski resort on the mountain above Brasov, covers winter sports.
