About this webcam
The Zell am Ziller Webcam looks down on the village of Zell am Ziller in the Zillertal valley of Tyrol, Austria. It switches between two views. The close one fills the frame with chalet roofs and hotel balconies, a white church spire near the middle and the river Ziller bending past green meadows in the lower right. The wide one pulls back along the valley floor, taking in farmland, the curving river and conifer forest climbing to high pastures and scattered farmhouses. The camera is run by the ZillerSeasons Luxury Hotel Collection, which has two of its hotels in the village, and it streams around the clock. Low cloud can settle over the slopes after rain, and in winter snow covers the rooftops and the open fields in front of them.
About Zell am Ziller
Zell am Ziller sits at 575 meters (1,886 feet) on the floor of the Zillertal, close to where the Gerlosbach stream joins the Ziller. It is a small place, with 1,786 residents at the start of 2026 living on 2.44 square kilometers (0.94 square miles), and it lies about 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) north of Mayrhofen. The name first appears in a charter of Archbishop Adalbert III of Salzburg in 1188, which records the parish of Zell.
Gold shaped the village. Miners worked the Hainzenberg above Zell from at least 1506 until 1930, when the deposits were no longer worth the effort. Brewing goes back even further. The Zillertal brewery was founded in 1500 and is regarded as the oldest private brewery in Tyrol. The parish church of St. Veit was rebuilt from 1779 after a flood destroyed its Gothic predecessor, and only the old tower survived.
The railway that follows the river on the camera is the Zillertal Railway, a narrow-gauge line with a track width of 760 millimeters (about 2.5 feet) that runs 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Jenbach to Mayrhofen and stops in Zell. ZillerSeasons runs two of its four Zillertal hotels here, DasPosthotel and MalisGarten, and streams this camera on its YouTube channel as a 24/7 view of the valley.
Weather and Climate in Zell am Ziller
Zell am Ziller has a mountain valley climate with four distinct seasons. Records from Mayrhofen, 7 kilometers (4 miles) up the valley, put July as the warmest month at around 19 C (66 F) and January as the coldest at about -1 C (30 F). Summer is also the wettest time of year. June typically brings around 202 mm (8 inches) of rain, the most of any month, and low cloud can hide the upper slopes on the camera for hours after a wet spell.
Winter puts snow on the rooftops and turns the fields in front of the village white. January is drier and sunnier, with around 88 mm (3.5 inches) of precipitation, and historic snow depths in the Zillertal Arena ski area average about 105 cm (41 inches) at the top and 40 cm (16 inches) at the bottom in that month. Spring reaches the valley floor before the high pastures, so April can show green fields beneath snow on the upper slopes. In October the broadleaf trees along the river turn yellow against the darker conifers on the mountainside.
Things to Do Near Zell am Ziller
Zell is the gateway to the Zillertal Arena, the largest ski area in the valley. It was formed in 2000 when the ski areas of Zell, Gerlos and Konigsleiten merged, and today it has around 150 kilometers (93 miles) of slopes and about 52 lifts, with terrain reaching 2,500 meters (8,202 feet). The Rosenalmbahn and Karspitzbahn cable cars connect the village with the slopes. Above Zell on the Hainzenberg, the Goldschaubergwerk show mine covers 350 years of gold mining with a multimedia tour through an old tunnel. The tour starts at the Hochzeller Kasealm, a mountain cheese hut 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) above the village on the road to Gerlos.
In early May the village holds the Gauderfest, in the days before the first Sunday of the month. Austria added the festival to its national UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in 2014, and it brings processions, music, traditional dress, ranggeln wrestling and a Gauderbock beer brewed for the occasion by the local brewery. For a day trip, the Gerlos Pass road climbs out of the valley past Gerlos and over into Salzburg state. On the far side, the Krimml Waterfalls drop a total of 380 meters (1,247 feet), the highest falls in Austria, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) east of Zell as the crow flies.
