About this webcam

The Innerleithen Webcam looks over the practice putting green and the 1st tee at Innerleithen Golf Club, on the floor of the Leithen Valley just north of Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders. A green corrugated-iron hut stands on the left of the frame beside a paved path, and small pin flags dot the putting green in front of it. Beyond the green the ground rises to a higher bank of mown turf, while on the right a lane curves away behind a timber fence, with trees and rough hillside closing off the view. The club runs the camera so golfers can check the state of the course before they set out, which makes it a quick read on frost, snow and wet ground.

About Innerleithen and Its Golf Club

Innerleithen Golf Club was formed on 22 September 1886 at a meeting in the Traquair Arms Hotel, and the club credits the layout to Open champion Willie Park Jr. It counts itself among the oldest golf clubs in the Scottish Borders. The course has nine holes, with separate back-nine tees for an 18-hole round, and it lies on the old river bed of the Leithen Water, so it is easy to walk despite the hills around it. The Leithen Water and a network of burns come into play on several holes, including the salmon leap by the 2nd and a stretch beside the river on the 7th.

The camera covers the start of the round. The 1st hole, called Bridge, is a par 3 of 170 yards (155 meters), and the club says this view takes in the 1st tee, the practice green and the sign that tells golfers whether the course is open. The course sits on Leithen Road about 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) north of the town center, at roughly 170 meters (560 feet) above sea level.

Innerleithen stands where the Leithen Water, flowing down from the north, joins the River Tweed. Tradition dates the town to AD 737 and an itinerant monk called St. Ronan, and it had a population of 3,152 in 2022. Wool built the place: at its peak five mills worked here, and the last of them, Caerlee Mills, closed in April 2013. Mountain biking has since taken over much of that role. Innerleithen is one of Forestry and Land Scotland’s 7stanes trail centers and has hosted national downhill events since the early 1990s.

Weather and Climate in Innerleithen

The valley has a cool, damp inland climate. Modeled data for the golf course over the ten years from 2015 to 2024 put January afternoons at about 5 to 6°C (41 to 43°F), with nights close to freezing. April afternoons reach around 10°C (50°F). July and August are the warmest months, usually 17 to 19°C (63 to 66°F) by day and about 11°C (52°F) at night, before October cools back to around 12°C (54°F).

Rain comes in every season, about 1,050 millimeters (41 inches) in a typical year, with April usually the driest month and December the wettest. Snow does settle on the valley floor in winter. At this latitude the day lasts about 17.5 hours at midsummer and only about 7 hours in late December, so winter golf fits into a short window of light.

Things to Do Near Innerleithen

Traquair House, about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) south of the town center, claims to be the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. Its Bear Gates have stayed shut since 1796, when the 7th Earl vowed to keep them sealed after the death of the Countess of Traquair. The house brewery was revived in 1965 by Peter Maxwell Stuart, the 20th Laird, using its 18th-century equipment.

In the town, Robert Smail’s Printing Works is a letterpress office founded in 1866 that has kept working for more than 150 years, and visitors can get hands-on in its case room. St. Ronan’s Wells grew up around a natural spring in the 1820s and was enlarged in 1896 for indoor bathing and bottling the water, and its visitor center tells the story of the spa. Walter Scott wrote about the town in his 1824 novel St. Ronan’s Well. The town’s Border Games, held over the first and second weeks of July, date from 1827 and are the oldest organized sports meeting in Scotland.

Riders have the 7stanes Innerleithen trails, with Glentress, another 7stanes center, nearby. The Tweed Valley Railway Path is a traffic-free tarmac route that follows the River Tweed, and Scottish Borders Council lists 14 walking routes around Innerleithen and Walkerburn, from 3 to 15.5 kilometers (1.9 to 9.6 miles).
