The Saint Petersburg Webcam looks west along Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s main avenue, where Sadovaya Street crosses it. Two cameras on the building at Nevsky Prospekt 54 share the player. The street-level camera faces the long cream and white colonnade of Great Gostiny Dvor across the traffic lanes, with the stairs of a pedestrian underpass in the foreground and the red tower of the old City Duma on the skyline. The rooftop camera takes in the whole junction: the curved corner of the National Library of Russia on the left, Sadovaya Street and its tram tracks, Gostiny Dvor, and the green dome of Kazan Cathedral beyond. On autumn evenings the rooftop view looks straight into the setting sun.

About Nevsky Prospekt and Gostiny Dvor

Nevsky Prospekt runs about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) from the Admiralty in the west to the Moscow Railway Station and on to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The stretch on camera sits near the middle. Great Gostiny Dvor fills the south side of the avenue here. Building work began in 1757 to a design by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, which was dropped for a cheaper Neoclassical plan by Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe, and the complex took 28 years to finish. It covers 53,000 square meters (570,000 square feet), and its arcades run for more than one kilometer (0.6 miles) around the block, which made it one of the first shopping arcades in the world. By the 20th century it held ten indoor streets and 178 shops. After World War II the inner walls came down and it became one large shopping mall.

The red tower above the traffic belongs to the former City Duma, whose building went up on Nevsky between 1784 and 1787. Giacomo Ferrari added the five-sided tower from 1799 to 1804 as a fire watch and signal post. It stands about 48 meters (157 feet) high, and from 1839 it was a station on the optical telegraph line to Warsaw, a chain of 149 relay posts over roughly 1,200 kilometers (746 miles). The green dome behind Gostiny Dvor belongs to Kazan Cathedral, about 500 meters (0.3 miles) further west.

Weather and Climate in Saint Petersburg

Winters are long and dark. January highs average around -3 C (27 F), with nights near -8 C (18 F), and snow falls most often from December to February, when it can cover the pavements in front of Gostiny Dvor. Daylight shrinks to about 5 hours 51 minutes at the winter solstice, so the cameras show the avenue under streetlights for much of a winter day. Spring comes slowly: April highs reach about 8 C (46 F) while nights still hover around freezing.

Summer is the bright season. July highs reach about 22 C (72 F), with nights near 14 C (57 F), and July and August are also the wettest months, at roughly 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain each out of about 700 millimeters (28 inches) a year. From late May to mid-July the White Nights keep the sun no more than 9 degrees below the horizon, so the sky over Nevsky never turns fully dark, and the longest day lasts about 18 hours 50 minutes. October cools to highs near 9 C (48 F) and lows near 4 C (39 F), and the low afternoon sun turns the Duma tower a warm orange.

Things to Do Near Nevsky Prospekt

Gostiny Dvor is still a department store. The National Library of Russia occupies the curved corner building across Sadovaya Street, and Ostrovsky Square, home of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, lies about 300 meters (980 feet) to the south. Walk about 500 meters (0.3 miles) west along Nevsky and you reach the colonnade of Kazan Cathedral, with the Singer House directly opposite it at the Griboyedov Canal. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood stands a short walk north up the same canal.

Keep going west and Nevsky brings you to Palace Square, about 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles) from Gostiny Dvor, and the Admiralty at the avenue’s western end. Heading east instead, the avenue crosses the Fontanka on the Anichkov Bridge. Anichkov Palace near the bridge is the oldest building on Nevsky that still stands, and the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace across the river was designed by Andrei Stackenschneider in 1846 to 1848 for its corner with the Fontanka.
