Valparaiso Webcam – Watch Chile’s Hillside Port and Bay

The Valparaiso Webcam looks roughly west across El Almendral, the flat lower district of Valparaiso, Chile, from a rooftop high on the hillside at the eastern edge of the city center. Weathered corrugated iron roofs fill the foreground. Beyond them, the streets of El Almendral run toward the old port, with the tall concrete block of the National Congress on the left and the curve of the bay on the right. Container cranes line the far end of the harbor, and houses climb the hills on the left all the way to the skyline. About Valparaiso

Juan de Saavedra founded Valparaiso in 1536 and named it after his native village, Valparaiso de Arriba. The town became a favored stopover for ships rounding South America through the Strait of Magellan, and it gained particular importance between 1848 and 1858 supplying the California Gold Rush. In 2003 UNESCO added the Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaiso to the World Heritage List. The city lies about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Santiago by road.

El Almendral takes up most of this view. Since 1990 it has been the seat of Chile’s National Congress, which meets in a modern building on Avenida Pedro Montt. Work on it began in October 1988 to a design by the architects Juan Cardenas, Jose Covacevic and Raul Farru, and it used some 26,000 cubic meters (34,000 cubic yards) of reinforced concrete. On the stream it is the tall pale tower left of center, split by a deep central recess near the top.

The steep slopes behind it explain the city’s ascensores, the funiculars that link the flat streets with the hills. Valparaiso has had as many as 30 of them. Sixteen survive, and all are National Monuments of Chile. The oldest, Ascensor Concepcion, opened in 1883, and Ascensor Polanco is the only true vertical elevator among them.

Weather and Climate in Valparaiso

Valparaiso stays mild all year, and fog from the Humboldt Current affects the city for most of it. The 1991 to 2020 averages at the Punta Angeles lighthouse give January highs of 21.9 C (71 F) and lows of 13.6 C (56 F). April cools to 19.8 C (68 F) by day and 10.7 C (51 F) at night. July averages 16.3 C (61 F) and 8.1 C (47 F), and by October afternoons are back to 19 C (66 F), with nights near 9.5 C (49 F).

Rain is almost entirely a winter event. About 300 of the year’s 363 millimeters (14.3 inches) fall between May and August, with June the wettest month at 106 millimeters (4.2 inches), while January averages just 0.2 millimeters. Winter also brings strong winds and short days: the summer months log about 245 to 279 hours of sunshine each, the winter months only 81 to 117. On the camera, summer tends to mean long bright afternoons over the bay, while in winter cloud can sit low over the hills and hide the far end of the harbor.

Things to Do Near Valparaiso

Most of what visitors come for lies toward the far end of this view, around the old port and the hills above it. Ascensor Concepcion still climbs to Cerro Concepcion, and Ascensor Reina Victoria and Ascensor El Peral, both opened in 1902, serve Cerro Alegre. Ascensor Artilleria has carried passengers up Cerro Artilleria since 1893. Between rides, the city’s promenades, among them Paseo 21 de Mayo, Paseo Yugoslavo, Paseo Gervasoni and Paseo Atkinson, look out over the rooftops and the water.

On Cerro Bellavista, the Museo a Cielo Abierto is an open-air gallery of murals painted on the hill’s walls. The city’s museums include La Sebastiana, one of the poet Pablo Neruda’s homes, and the National Maritime Museum. Down in the flat center, Sotomayor Square is faced by the Edificio Armada de Chile. On New Year’s Eve the hillsides fill with people looking for a view of the fireworks show, which makes it a good night to keep this stream open.
