Birštonas is a small town in southern Lithuania, tucked into a curve of the Nemunas River. Surrounded by pine forests and gentle hills, it’s one of those places that feels more connected to nature than most. The town sits inside a bend of the river that forms a natural peninsula, which makes it a good spot for walking and biking along the banks.
Geographically, Birštonas is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Kaunas and is part of the Dzūkija region. What makes it stand out is the nearby Nemunas Loops Regional Park, where the river twists through the landscape in wide, scenic turns. These loops are best seen from the observation tower just outside the town—the highest in Lithuania—offering a clear view over the trees and winding water below. It’s also a geothermal area, which explains the town’s long history as a mineral spa destination.
Aside from the spa culture, Birštonas is also known for its clean air and low noise levels, which is why it draws so many visitors looking to unwind for a weekend. There’s a quiet rhythm to life here, whether you’re strolling through the parks, watching cranes over the wetlands, or just checking out the Birštonas webcam to see what’s going on in town. It’s not a major tourist magnet, and that’s part of what makes it feel like a place people actually live in—not just visit.
