About this webcam
The Port Isaac Webcam looks down from the clifftop onto the harbor at Port Isaac, a fishing village on the north coast of Cornwall, England. Small fishing boats lie on their moorings in clear water, with ropes running across the surface, rocky ledges along the top of the frame and a fringe of bracken in the bottom-right corner. Port Isaac Harbour Commissioners present the stream, which runs on the YouTube channel of the Old School Hotel. The scene changes more than a quiet harbor suggests. Afternoon sun can lay a sheet of glitter across the water, the shallows turn green and turquoise on bright days, and the boats swing on their lines as the wind and tide shift. Crews come and go with the fishing, so the number of boats on the moorings can change through the day.
About Port Isaac
Port Isaac sits in the civil parish of St Endellion and has a population of 721. It has been a fishing village since at least the 14th century, and its pier was built during the reign of Henry VIII. Pilchards carried the local economy for centuries: the fishery here began before the 16th century, and by 1850 the harbor held 49 registered fishing boats and four fish cellars. The pilchard shoals are long gone, but fishermen still land fish, crab and lobsters at the Platt, as the harbor front is known in the village.
The historic core of Port Isaac became a Conservation Area in 1971 and contains around 90 listed buildings, all of them Grade II. The camera is listed at the Old School Hotel, a schoolhouse built in 1875 that now stands as a hotel on the clifftop above the harbor, which explains the steep downward angle of the view. From that height the frame takes in the water and the moored boats rather than the village streets.
An RNLI lifeboat station opened here in 1869. The current inshore boat, the D-class Copeland Bell, has served since 2009 and is kept in the station built beside the beach in 1927. Port Isaac is also known well beyond Cornwall. It stood in for the fictional Portwenn in the ITV series Doc Martin, which ran from 2004 to 2022, and it is home to the Fisherman’s Friends, the sea shanty group that started out singing together on the Platt.
Weather and Climate in Port Isaac
The nearest long-running weather record comes from Newquay Airport at St Mawgan, further down the same coast. Winters there are mild, with average highs of 9 C (48 F) in January and February and average lows of about 4 C (39 F). July and August bring average highs of 19.1 C (66 F) and lows of about 13.5 C (56 F). Frost and snow are very rare on the Cornish coast, and the airport station records about 1,019 millimeters (40.1 inches) of rain and 1,758 hours of sunshine in an average year.
The north coast faces the Celtic Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, and is the more exposed side of Cornwall, so gray, wind-ruffled water is a regular part of the winter picture. Spring and summer tend to give the clearest view down into the shallows, and July has the county’s highest average of 7.6 hours of sunshine a day. Autumn shows up in the corner of the frame, where the bracken on the cliff edge had already turned copper by early October.
