About this webcam
The Windermere Webcam stands on the lakeshore at Low Wood Bay, on the northeastern side of Windermere in England’s Lake District, and looks out over the Low Wood Bay Marina. In the marina view, motor launches and small cruisers sit in a row along a floating pontoon, an orange safety boat is tied up alongside, and two wooden jetties reach out into open water. Beyond them the lake runs to a wooded far shore, with the fells rising behind. The camera works through a set of preset views, so it can also turn to the watersports launch, Wray Bay or the Langdale Pikes. Wind on the water, low cloud on the fells and the coming and going of boats change the picture through the day.
About Windermere and Low Wood Bay
Windermere is the largest lake in England by length, area and volume. It runs 18.07 kilometers (11.23 miles) from north to south, is up to 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) wide and reaches a maximum depth of 67 meters (219 feet). Its surface sits 39 meters (128 feet) above sea level and covers 14.73 square kilometers (5.69 square miles). The lake holds eighteen islands, the largest being Belle Isle at around a kilometer long, and it drains south through the River Leven into Morecambe Bay.
Low Wood Bay lies on the main road between Ambleside and the town of Windermere, about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) from Brockhole. The camera belongs to Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa, run by English Lakes Hotels, Resorts and Venues, and its current YouTube stream has run since December 2025. The marina was fully refurbished in 2017 with a new floating pontoon system held on anchors, built to rise and fall with the level of the lake.
The operator lists six camera positions: Marina, Marina jetty, Watersports launch, Low Wood Bay Resort, Wray Bay and The Langdales. The Wray Bay preset looks across to the western shore, where Wray Castle, a Gothic Revival castle, stands on the lake. The Langdales view points toward the Langdale Pikes, whose summits include, from west to east, Pike of Stickle, Loft Crag, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark. Harrison Stickle is the highest of them at 736 meters (2,415 feet).
Weather and Climate at Windermere
Windermere has a mild but very wet climate. Averaged over 2015 to 2024 at the camera’s location, January days reach about 6.5 C (44 F) with nights around 2.3 C (36 F), while July and August highs sit near 18.5 C (65 F) and nights around 12.4 C (54 F). October cools to about 13 C (55 F) by day. Precipitation adds up to roughly 2,000 millimeters (79 inches) a year, with December the wettest month and April usually the driest.
On the camera, showers often blur the far shore and hide the tops of the fells, then clear to bright light on the water. In winter the fells behind the lake can carry snow while the marina stays green and grey below. Summer tends to bring the busiest scenes, when the watersports center sends hire boats, paddleboards and dinghies out from the bay, and on calm mornings the water can lie flat enough to mirror the moored boats.
Things to Do Near Low Wood Bay
The watersports center at Low Wood Bay hires out equipment for waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and flyboarding, and hires out boats. A short trip south along the shore, Brockhole is the Lake District Visitor Centre, with 12 hectares (30 acres) of grounds that include 4 hectares (10 acres) of formal gardens and an adventure playground.
Three of the lake’s original four passenger boats survive: the MV Tern of 1891, the MV Teal of 1936 and the MV Swan of 1938. Further south at Bowness-on-Windermere, the main town on the shore, the Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories reopened, much enlarged, in March 2019. The Windermere Ferry, a vehicle-carrying cable ferry, links the eastern and western shores. For walkers, the Langdale Pikes that fill the camera’s Langdales view are a classic fell day, with Harrison Stickle the high point.
