About this webcam

The Crater Lake Webcam offers a sweeping look north across Crater Lake from the Sinnott Memorial Overlook at Rim Village in southern Oregon. Positioned at about 2,164 meters (7,100 feet) above sea level, the camera can reveal the deep blue lake, Wizard Island, Llao Rock and, in clear conditions, distant Mount Thielsen.

About Crater Lake

Crater Lake lies high in the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon within Crater Lake National Park. The lake occupies the caldera left by the collapse of ancient Mount Mazama after a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. With no rivers flowing into or out of the lake, its water comes mainly from rain and snow, contributing to the remarkable clarity and intense blue color for which Crater Lake is famous.

The Crater Lake Webcam is mounted at the Sinnott Memorial Overlook in Rim Village, one of the best-known viewpoints in the park. The overlook sits on Victor Rock about 274 meters (900 feet) above the lake and was built in 1930, opening to visitors in 1931. The rustic stone structure blends into the caldera wall and is part of the historic Rim Village landscape. On clear days, the camera view includes Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone rising from the lake, as well as the prominent cliffs of Llao Rock and Mount Thielsen beyond the caldera.

This viewpoint is especially useful for seeing how quickly conditions can change at high elevation. Clouds can fill the caldera and completely hide the lake, while clear weather can suddenly expose miles of rugged volcanic scenery. Snow may also obscure parts of the Crater Lake Webcam during winter.

Weather and Climate in Crater Lake

Crater Lake has long, snowy winters and short, generally dry summers. January average daily temperatures near park headquarters range from roughly minus 8 Celsius (18 Fahrenheit) at night to 1 Celsius (34 Fahrenheit) during the day. July and August are much milder, with average daily highs near 21 Celsius (69 Fahrenheit) and lows around 5 Celsius (41 Fahrenheit). Spring arrives slowly, and significant snow can remain around Rim Village well into May and June.

Snow is one of the defining features of the Crater Lake Webcam. The park receives around 12.5 meters (41 feet) of snow in an average year, and winter storms can hide the lake behind clouds or falling snow. Summer viewers are more likely to see blue skies and clear water, while autumn can bring crisp visibility followed by the season’s first snow. Weather changes rapidly around the exposed caldera rim, so the camera can look dramatically different within a short period.

Things to Do Near Crater Lake

Most visits center on exploring the caldera rim. Rim Drive circles the lake for about 53 kilometers (33 miles), linking numerous overlooks and trailheads when the road is open. Hiking is another major attraction, with trails ranging from short scenic walks to more demanding routes. Visitors can also explore Rim Village, see historic Crater Lake Lodge, photograph Wizard Island and learn about the area’s volcanic history at park exhibits.

The Sinnott Memorial Overlook itself is worth visiting when seasonal access is available. Its sheltered viewing area combines panoramic scenery with exhibits explaining the geology and history of Crater Lake. During winter, deep snow transforms the park and activities can include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Road and trail access varies considerably with snowfall, making the Crater Lake Webcam particularly useful for getting a visual impression of conditions around Rim Village.
