About this webcam

The Groombridge Station Webcam looks along the platform at Groombridge, a stop on the Spa Valley Railway heritage line in East Sussex. The camera points down the tracks toward a road bridge resting on a gray stone pier, with the platform edge and a green-painted wooden building on the right and a grassy cutting bank on the left. Near the end of the platform a boarded crossing spans the rails, and just beyond it the two tracks are joined by a set of points. On running days, steam and diesel trains working between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge call here, so the quiet platform can give way to a train drawing in under the bridge. Railcam UK runs the camera with the Spa Valley Railway, and the stream overlay credits both.

About Groombridge Station

Groombridge station stands on Station Road in the East Sussex half of Groombridge, a village of about 1,600 people that straddles the border with Kent. The boundary follows a small stream called the Grom. New Groombridge, the larger part and the side with the station, lies in Withyham parish in Wealden District, while Old Groombridge across the stream belongs to Speldhurst parish in the Borough of Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Royal Tunbridge Wells is about 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) away.

The first station here opened on 1 October 1866 and grew into a junction where the line from Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells Central met the Oxted Line, the Wealden Line and the Cuckoo Line toward Eastbourne. Coaches for Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells were once detached from London trains at Groombridge, a job that faded after a spur at Ashurst Junction opened in 1914 and let trains bypass the station. British Rail closed it to passengers in July 1985. By the time trains returned in August 1997, the original building had become a private home and offices, so a new station was built on the opposite side of the Station Road bridge.

Today Groombridge is one of four stations on the 8.9 kilometer (5.5 mile) Spa Valley Railway: Tunbridge Wells West, High Rocks, Groombridge and Eridge. The preservation society formed on 13 September 1985, ran its first trains at Tunbridge Wells West in December 1996 and reached Eridge on 25 March 2011, where the heritage line meets the national network’s Uckfield line. Battle of Britain class 34053 Sir Keith Park has been based on the line since 2020, and Caledonian Railway 828 has been on long-term hire since 2022, alongside diesels of Classes 25, 31 and 33. The railway is now raising 300,000 pounds to replace the old steel Broom Lane Bridge between High Rocks and Groombridge.

Weather and Climate in Groombridge

Groombridge lies inland in the Weald, and its weather is typical of southeast England away from the coast. Ten years of reanalysis data (2016 to 2025) put January highs near 7 C (45 F) with nights around 2 C (36 F), so frost can settle on the ballast and the grass bank on clear winter mornings. Spring warms from about 10 C (51 F) in March to 17 C (62 F) in May. July and August are the warmest months, with highs near 22 C (71 F) and lows around 14 C (57 F). Autumn and early winter are the wettest stretch: October, November and December each average more than 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) of rain, against about 45 millimeters (1.8 inches) in April.

The scene follows the seasons. In early October the grass on the cutting bank was still green while the trees beyond the bridge were starting to turn yellow. Daylight lasts roughly 8 hours around the winter solstice and more than 16 hours in late June. On sunny mornings, low sun can flare across the left side of the picture and wash out the bank.

Things to Do Near Groombridge Station

Groombridge Place, in the Kent half of the village, has roots going back to 1239 and was home to the de Cobham family and Sir Richard Waller. Its formal gardens and the Enchanted Forest are open to visitors. Old Groombridge has the Crown Inn and St John’s chapel, which John Packer built in 1625. On the East Sussex side, New Groombridge has the Junction Inn, a bakery, a general store and St Thomas church.

The railway itself is the obvious outing. Ride north to Tunbridge Wells West, the line’s main station and headquarters, or south to Eridge, where passengers can change onto national rail services on the Uckfield line. On the way the trains pass High Rocks, a sandstone outcrop protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which has its own halt. In Royal Tunbridge Wells, the Pantiles and its chalybeate spring have been the town’s best-known landmarks since it was founded.
