Apron pavement and runway markings fill the bottom of the picture, airfield grass and the airport boundary run across the middle, and the rooftops of northern Lisbon rise to a low wooded ridge on the horizon. About Lisbon Airport

Humberto Delgado Airport, still widely called Portela, opened on 15 October 1942 and took its current name in 2016, after the air force general who founded TAP Air Portugal. It lies in the Olivais district, 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) northeast of the historic centre, at an elevation of 114 meters (374 feet). More than 414,000 people live within 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) of it, the highest figure of any major European airport, and approach paths run over rooftops.

One runway carries all of it. Runway 02/20 is 3,705 meters (12,156 feet) of asphalt equipped for CAT II and CAT III approaches, renumbered from 03/21 on 19 May 2022, when magnetic variation drifted far enough to change the number. The older 17/35 strip is closed. That single runway makes Lisbon the thirteenth busiest airport in Europe and the hub of TAP Air Portugal.

The airport also has a scheduled end. In May 2024 the government picked the Alcochete firing range for a replacement, named after the poet Luis de Camoes. Its first runway is due by 2030 and operations from 2034, after which Humberto Delgado is to be dismantled.

April averages 19.3 and 11.7 C (67 and 53 F), October 23.2 and 15.7 C (74 and 60 F). The wind readout on the overlay is the best clue to which end of the runway aircraft will use.

Gare do Oriente next door is Santiago Calatrava’s railway station, and Alvaro Siza Vieira’s Portugal Pavilion stands on the same ground. The Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest in the European Union, crosses the Tagus 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) away.

Closer in, Estadio Jose Alvalade is 2.9 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the runway and Estadio da Luz 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles), with the Jardim Zoologico between them at 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). The old city is a short metro ride: Castelo de Sao Jorge is 7.3 kilometers (4.5 miles) away, Praca do Comercio 8 kilometers (5 miles).
