The gate was cut from a single block of stone from the quarries of O Porrino, and the same block supplied two smaller pieces: a stone shaped like a plow at the start of the Gran Via, and a wedge at the start of Avenida de Castelao. A 2019 renovation pedestrianized the center of the roundabout. The plaza is also where the city gathers: it has hosted Vigo’s New Year’s Eve festivities, and Celta Vigo supporters celebrate big results there.

In the park stands the Pazo Quinones de Leon, a 17th-century manor house given to the city in the early 20th century and now a museum set among gardens, ponds and fountains. It shows archaeology found in Vigo, a large collection of Galician painting and the Policarpo Sanz collection of 17th and 18th-century European pictures.

North of the plaza, between it and the port, O Castro hill rises over the city center. The fortress on its summit was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th century and joined by the old city walls to the castle of San Sebastian. Today it is a viewpoint over the port, the ria, the old town and the Cies Islands, and the hill also holds a reconstructed hillfort village, the settlement the town grew from. For the sea, Samil beach is about 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles) west of the plaza.
