Michigan City Webcam – Beach and Lighthouse Pier Views

The Michigan City Webcam looks north across Washington Park Beach to the southern end of Lake Michigan, in Michigan City, Indiana. Sand fills the bottom of the frame, the harbor pier cuts across the middle with its raised steel catwalk running alongside it, and the red tower of the 1904 East Light stands at the far end of it. Past the pier there is open water to the horizon. What happens in the frame depends almost entirely on the wind and the calendar: umbrellas and volleyball nets through July and August, a wide empty beach and a hard gray lake in November, snow over the same sand in January. Boats come and go through the harbor mouth on the right whenever the water is calm enough for them.

About Michigan City

Michigan City sits in LaPorte County on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, about 72 kilometers (45 miles) east of Chicago. It was incorporated in 1836, had a population of 32,075 at the 2020 census, and covers roughly 59 square kilometers (22.9 square miles) at an elevation of 193 meters (633 feet). Trail Creek reaches the lake at this point, and the harbor built around its mouth is the water on the right of the shot.

Washington Park takes up the entire lakefront in view. The station was automated in 1960, joined the National Register of Historic Places in February 1988, and its fog signal still sounds two blasts every 30 seconds.

An older light stands back in the park behind the beach. The Old Michigan City Light was built in 1858 at a cost of $8,000 and was retired in 1904, when its lantern, lens and light were carried out to the new tower on the extended pier. That building is now the Old Lighthouse Museum, with a fourth order Fresnel lens on display inside. The Washington Park Zoo, which keeps around 90 animals on a site across the road from the sand, and the Guy Foreman Amphitheatre sit in the same park.

The climate is humid continental, and the lake shapes most of it. July is the warmest month, averaging 23.6 C (74.5 F) with typical highs near 25 C (77 F), and that is when the beach in frame is at its busiest. January is the coldest, averaging minus 3.3 C (26 F) with average highs around minus 1 C (30 F). Spring runs late on this shoreline. The water stays cold well after the air has warmed, so an onshore wind keeps the beach cooler than the ground a few kilometers inland, and the first genuinely warm afternoons on the sand often arrive weeks behind the calendar.

Water temperature decides the swimming season more than air temperature does. The lake off Michigan City averages about 21 C (70 F) through the summer, peaks near 22.5 C (72.5 F) in July, and typically holds above 20 C (68 F) from July into September. Winter is the other extreme. When cold air runs south down the full length of Lake Michigan, narrow lake effect bands can settle over this corner of Indiana and leave far more snow than the regional average: about 90 centimeters (3 feet) fell on Michigan City in a single January 2024 event. On days like that the beach in the frame can be under snow rather than sand.

Things to Do Near Michigan City

Most of what there is to do sits inside the shot. The walk out along the pier to the East Light is the standard trip, and the Old Lighthouse Museum opens every day except Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. outside the winter months. The Washington Park Zoo is across the road from the beach, and the Guy Foreman Amphitheatre is a short walk from it. Food in the park comes from the Sunset Grille, Fish Camp and the Base Camp Marina Cafe and Provisions. Harbor Country Adventures runs boat tours and rents kayaks and wave runners out of the harbor, and Stoke Riders teaches kiteboarding off the same stretch of water.

Inland, Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets and the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa are both inside the city, and the Uptown Arts District and the Barker Mansion of 1857 are the two stops worth making downtown. Friendship Botanic Gardens covers 42 hectares (105 acres). West along the same shoreline, Indiana Dunes National Park has 14 trail systems, and the Bismarck Hill Hiking Trail climbs three dunes for a view back over the lake.
