About this webcam

The Miami Beach Webcam looks out over the beach at the Acqualina Resort in Sunny Isles Beach, just north of the city of Miami Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast. From above the resort grounds, the camera takes in a green lawn set with rows of bright red umbrellas and an oversized chess board, then the wide pale sand with its loungers and umbrellas, and the turquoise Atlantic stretching to the horizon, with palm trees framing the left side of the view. A second tab moves south to South Beach, where a street camera looks down on Collins Avenue at a busy intersection, with hotel towers, palms, traffic lights and the steady flow of cars, taxis and people. One shows the beach, the other the street life that Miami Beach is famous for.

About Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach

Miami Beach is a city of 82,890 people (2020 census) built on natural and human-made barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, across the water from Miami. It was incorporated on March 26, 1915, and covers 39.42 square kilometers (15.22 square miles), about half of it water. Its southern end, South Beach, holds the Miami Beach Architectural District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and described as the world’s largest collection of Art Deco architecture, with hundreds of hotels and apartment buildings put up between 1923 and 1943. Collins Avenue, Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road are its best known streets.

Sunny Isles Beach, where the main camera stands, is a separate city of 22,342 people (2020 census), incorporated on June 16, 1997. It sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, north of Haulover Park and south of Golden Beach, on just 2.62 square kilometers (1.01 square miles) of land. In 1920 the developer Harvey Baker Graves promoted the area as an American Riviera, and today its row of oceanfront towers is ranked the 14th tallest skyline in the United States. Collins Avenue, State Road A1A, runs the length of both cities.

The beach camera belongs to the Acqualina Resort, which streams it on its own YouTube channel, and the Collins Avenue camera is run by ZeroEight, which has streamed South Beach street life around the clock for more than a year.

The seasons read clearly on the Miami Beach Webcam. Winter tends to bring clear skies and calm water, with the resort umbrellas open over the sand. Summer afternoons can turn quickly, with towering clouds building over the ocean and short, heavy downpours sweeping across the sand before the sun returns. On the Collins Avenue tab, rain shows up as glossy, reflecting pavement and fewer people on the sidewalks.

Things to Do Near Miami Beach

In Sunny Isles Beach, the Newport Fishing Pier reaches about 800 meters (half a mile) out into the Atlantic. First designated historic in 1982, it was damaged by Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and reopened after a rebuild on June 15, 2013. Haulover Park lies just to the south, and Oleta River State Park is close by.

Further south along Collins Avenue, South Beach is the place for Art Deco architecture, with hotels and apartment buildings from the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, along with Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road. Miami itself is a short drive west across the causeways over Biscayne Bay.
