Hollywood Beach Webcam – Florida’s Historic Broadwalk

The Hollywood Beach Webcam looks east from above the sand at Hollywood, Florida, through a row of coconut palms and across a wide pale beach to the Atlantic Ocean. The City of Hollywood runs it, and a second city camera on the Hollywood Beach Theatre, the old bandshell on the Broadwalk at Johnson Street, plays in the next tab. On the beach view, umbrellas and towels gather near the waterline, a lifeguard tower stands at the left edge, and ships sometimes show as specks on the horizon. Because the lens faces the ocean, the sun comes up in front of it, and rain squalls moving in from the sea can be seen well before they reach the shore. By afternoon the sun has moved behind the camera and lights the sand and water from the front.

About Hollywood Beach

Hollywood grew out of a plan by Joseph Wesley Young, who platted Hollywood by the Sea on his land in 1921 and wanted it to become the Atlantic City of south Florida. By 1923 he had finished its signature promenade, a pink cement walkway 30 feet (9 meters) wide and 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long that he named the Broadwalk. It is paved, not planked, which is why the name is not a misspelling of boardwalk. The Great Hurricane of 18 September 1926 left hundreds dead and stopped the boom, but the low and mid-rise hotels and apartments built along the front in the late 1920s and 1930s, in Art Moderne, Mediterranean Revival and Mid-Century Modern styles, are still there.

Today the Broadwalk runs 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the ocean, between Jefferson Street to the south and Sherman Street to the north. A 2007 upgrade added palm trees, public restrooms and separate lanes for walking, jogging and cycling, so cyclists and runners share it with people out for a stroll. Hollywood itself had 153,067 residents at the 2020 census and sits in Broward County, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Both cameras are at the Johnson Street end of the promenade. The Hollywood Beach Theatre is the historic bandshell facing Johnson Street, and a row of painted surfboards beside its stage carries the Margaritaville Beach Resort name. The resort next door came out of a $147 million public-private partnership with the city. The City’s description of the beach camera also mentions views of the FlowRider surf machine at Margaritaville and of people strolling and dining on the Broadwalk. The current setting looks out over the beach instead, so the angle can change from time to time.

Weather and Climate in Hollywood Beach

Hollywood has a warm, wet climate with no real winter. NOAA normals for 1991 to 2020 put January highs at 24.5 C (76 F) and lows around 15 C (59 F), and the months from November to May are the drier half of the year. Spring warms quickly, with April averaging 27.8 C (82 F) by day and 20 C (68 F) at night.

Summer is hot and stormy. July highs average 32 C (90 F) with lows of 24.6 C (76 F), and from June to October showers or thunderstorms fall on 14 to 16 days a month. The annual total is about 1,652 millimeters (65 inches). October is still warm, at 29.5 C (85 F) by day and 22.7 C (73 F) at night. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and a storm passing offshore can send heavy surf onto the beach in view.

Things to Do Near Hollywood Beach

The Broadwalk is the main attraction, and the Hollywood Beach Theatre right by the cameras hosts free live music in the evenings, typically Wednesday to Sunday from 7 to 9 pm. Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort sits next to it at 1111 North Ocean Drive, with its FlowRider standing wave for anyone who wants to try surfing without the ocean. A short walk away, Charnow Park at 300 Connecticut Street covers 1.85 acres (0.75 hectares) with an interactive fountain and a large public parking garage beside it. Keep heading north along the shore and the Dania Beach Fishing Pier is about 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) up the coast.

West of the beach, the Anne Kolb Nature Center at 751 Sheridan Street is the gateway to West Lake Park, a popular spot for kayaking. North Beach Park, a Broward County park at the north end of Hollywood Beach, has plenty of parking for a quieter stretch of sand. Inland, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood has been open since 1975.
